Transmontano Mastiff (Cão de Gado Transmontano)

Transmontano-Hirtenhund als Wandbild im Stil Kohle-Sketch, Raum: blauer Flur

It never works alone. According to the FCI standard, a flock’s protection is never entrusted to a single Transmontano Mastiff (Cão de Gado Transmontano), and these groups contain more males than females. Remarkably for such large dogs, the standard says males live together without conflict.

FCI Group 2 (Pinscher and Schnauzer, Molossoid and Swiss Mountain and Cattle Dogs), Section 2.2 Molossoid breeds, Mountain type, Standard No. 368 Cão de Gado Transmontano (Transmontano-Hirtenhund), without working trial, provisionally recognised

Size (height at the withers) Males 75 to 85 cm, females 68 to 78 cm
Weight Males 60 to 75 kg, females 50 to 60 kg
Life expectancy 6,7 years life expectancy at birth (mean) in Portugal’s pet registry, 1.009 dogs (Geraz et al. 2024)
Coat thick, medium length and abundant, smooth and very dense with palpable undercoat; shorter and thinner on head, ears, muzzle and legs
Colours in the standard often white with black, yellow, fawn or wolf-grey markings; solid fawn, yellow or wolf grey, brindled or not, often with white feet or blaze; tricolour also possible

Steep pastures, wolves and migrating flocks

The standard links its history closely to flock migrations on the Iberian Peninsula. Accompanying shepherds, it protected sheep and goats from wolves in the Trás-os-Montes uplands. Genetically it is very close to the Rafeiro do Alentejo and shares DNA segments with the Spanish Mastiff. The same genomic study estimates around 2.480 dogs in 2025 (Blaschikoff et al. 2026).

Provisional on the FCI list

The FCI provisionally recognised it on 26 February 2020. Until definitive acceptance, the FCI says Transmontanos receive no CACIB, the certificate towards International Beauty Champion status. They can nevertheless become World or Section Winner, and pedigrees carry the FCI logo.

Reserved, tractable, never frantic

Despite its size, the standard calls it tractable but reserved, cautious without aggression and always calm. Initially reserved with strangers, it then accepts them without difficulty and responds very well to gentle treatment. Harshness achieves little. It works attentively as a guardian, which you hear at night.

Up to 85 centimetres in daily life

A male weighing up to 75 kilos needs a large car, a sturdy gate and established lead manners before adulthood. The standard describes a light, ground-covering gait: it enjoys walking far but leisurely. Limit wild play and stairs during growth.

Dense coat, thick skin

The medium-length, very dense coat and undercoat need thorough weekly brushing, more during moulting. Single or double hind dewclaws may be present; keep an eye on their length.

What Portuguese data show

In Portugal’s pet registry, covering 278.116 dogs that died between 2013 and 2022, the Transmontano had the lowest life expectancy at birth among native breeds at 6,73 years, while crossbreeds reached 9,48 years (Geraz et al. 2024). Owners entered the breed themselves, without pedigree verification. Genetically, three examined dogs showed the lowest inbreeding among Portuguese breeds, only an indication with so few animals (Blaschikoff et al. 2026). Studies of individual diseases are lacking.

A match for you if

you have land, experience with livestock guardian dogs and patience, guide kindly rather than loudly and seek a calm guardian. Better avoided if you share walls, expect quick obedience or hesitate over the costs of so much dog.
