Tips for colouring with children
Dogs make rewarding subjects because almost every child has an opinion about what a dog should look like. Let your child tell a story first: what's the dog's name? What has happened to them today? The colours often follow naturally from the story, and a purple shepherd dog is just as welcome at the kitchen table as a brown one.
The Labrador's large, clear areas suit younger children from around three. The Australian Shepherd with a ball and toys has more detail and suits children with a little more patience. The German Shepherd in the garden is a picture for long afternoons: thick fur, bushes and grasses that adults will enjoy too.
Which paper and pencils?
Ordinary 80 g/m² printer paper is perfectly adequate for coloured pencils. For felt-tip pens, choose thicker paper of at least 120 g/m² to prevent the colour bleeding through. Watercolours need drawing paper. Print the PDF at its original size, using ‘actual size’ or 100 per cent, so the margin stays clear for little hands.
From colouring page to favourite picture
A finished picture deserves pride of place: on the fridge, in a child's bedroom or as a card for Grandma. If you have a real dog at home, many children particularly enjoy finding their own dog's colours. Looking closely at the coat, counting the patches and comparing ear colours turns colouring into observation almost without noticing.
Colouring with several children
For a birthday party or an afternoon with friends, print several copies of each picture. Afterwards, line up all the Labradors and marvel at how different the same dog can look. It's a lovely chance to talk about favourite colours without anyone colouring anything ‘right’ or ‘wrong’. Anyone who wants to can write their imaginary dog's name underneath.
