Can dogs eat avocado?

Avocado auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

Only with caution, and never with the stone. Avocado is much less of a concern for dogs than for birds, rabbits or horses. The greatest danger is the stone.

Why avocado gets a yellow rating

Avocado contains persin. The ASPCA lists the plant as toxic to horses and says avocado is mainly a problem for birds, rabbits, donkeys, horses and ruminants. The Pet Poison Helpline describes avocado as non-toxic to dogs. The MSD Veterinary Manual is more cautious: dogs are considered relatively resistant, but there is a case report of two dogs with heart muscle damage after eating avocado. According to MSD, the leaves are the most toxic part. This uncertainty, along with the stone, is why avocado gets a yellow rating here.

What to watch out for

  • Dispose of the stone immediately: According to MSD and the Pet Poison Helpline, a swallowed stone can obstruct the stomach or intestines. Put it in a bin with a lid.
  • Leaves and skin: Keep an avocado plant on the windowsill out of reach, especially if your dog likes chewing plants.
  • No dips: Guacamole and spreads are off the menu if they contain onions, garlic or lots of salt. According to the ASPCA, plants in the onion family damage red blood cells.
  • Other pets in the home: If you have a bird or rabbit, avocado is clearly toxic to these animals.

What if your dog has eaten avocado?

A spoonful of flesh causes no problems for most dogs. Still, keep an eye on them and call your vet if they vomit, have diarrhoea, become weak or breathe unusually. If they have swallowed the stone, call immediately, even if they still seem lively. Tell the vet how big the stone was, when it happened and how much your dog weighs.

If you suspect poisoning, go straight to your vet or an emergency veterinary service.
