Yes, dogs can eat celery. The American Kennel Club (AKC) describes celery as generally safe and a good snack for dogs that need to lose weight. Celery has no entry of its own in the ASPCA plant database.
Why celery is a good choice
Celery stalks contain hardly any fat and few calories. They provide fibre, vitamins A, C and K, folate, potassium and manganese. Many dogs enjoy the crunch, and the AKC says celery can even freshen the breath a little. It does not replace a meal: your dog’s main nutrition comes from their food.
What to keep in mind
- Keep fibres short: The stalks are fibrous. Cut them into small pieces, especially for small dogs and puppies.
- Wash it: Raw is fine, but only after washing.
- Introduce new foods slowly: The AKC recommends introducing new foods gradually. Some dogs develop gas or soft stools.
- Plain rather than in a cooked dish: No salt, dip or soup containing onions.
- Treats count too: Even low-calorie snacks count towards the daily ration.
What if your dog chokes or eats too much?
If your dog gags on a piece of celery, stay calm and see whether they bring it up themselves. If breathing is difficult or gagging continues, go to the vet. A large portion may cause gas or diarrhoea. Call if these persist or your dog vomits.
If you suspect poisoning, contact your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
