Can dogs eat cherries?

Kirschen auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

Only without the stone, stalk and leaves. The ripe flesh of a cherry is fine for dogs. The stone is the problem, especially if it is chewed.

Why cherries are marked yellow

The ASPCA lists cherries, including sweet cherries, as toxic to dogs in its plant database. Stalks, leaves and stones contain cyanogenic glycosides that can release hydrogen cyanide, especially in wilting leaves. The Pet Poison Helpline explains more precisely: everything except the ripe flesh around the stone is considered toxic, with the stones the main concern. Chewing a stone can release hydrogen cyanide. If a dog swallows it whole, the Helpline does not expect poisoning, but stomach problems or a foreign body in the intestines are possible, depending on the dog’s size and the number of stones.

How to serve cherries safely

  • Remove the stones: Halve each cherry individually, remove the stone and take off the stalk.
  • No snacking under the tree: There are stones, leaves and stalks beneath cherry trees. It is best to walk past on a lead.
  • Just a few pieces: A few pitted halves are a snack, not a meal.
  • No cakes or preserves: Baked and preserved foods made for people contain a lot of sugar.

What if your dog has eaten cherry stones?

If your dog has swallowed one or two stones, monitor them. If there were many stones, your dog is small or the stones were chewed, call your vet and explain roughly how many were eaten and when. According to the ASPCA, warning signs include brick-red mucous membranes, dilated pupils, difficulty breathing, panting and shock. Seek help immediately if these occur. Repeated vomiting or an inability to pass stools may mean a stone is stuck.

If you suspect poisoning, take your dog to a vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
