Can dogs eat mushrooms?

Pilze auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

Shop-bought edible mushrooms only plain and occasionally; wild mushrooms never. Mushrooms are marked yellow because the species matters. A mushroom eaten in the woods or garden always calls for veterinary advice.

Why mushrooms are marked yellow

According to the MSD Veterinary Manual, dogs are particularly at risk because they eat whatever they find on walks. Many mushrooms are edible, but some are highly toxic. Even experienced enthusiasts often cannot identify them with certainty. The Pet Poison Helpline advises treating every eaten mushroom as toxic until an expert has identified it as harmless. Depending on the species, the digestive tract, nervous system, liver or kidneys may be affected. Some toxins act quickly; others take many hours. The American Kennel Club, however, says shop-bought edible mushrooms are usually safe for dogs.

What to watch for

  • Check the garden: In autumn, regularly check lawns and beds for mushrooms and remove them.
  • Stay alert on walks: Keep an eye on dogs sniffing around in woodland.
  • Avoid mushroom dishes: Mushroom dishes often contain butter, oil, onions or garlic. These do not belong in your dog’s bowl.

What if your dog has eaten a wild mushroom?

Call your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately, even if your dog still seems well. Explain when it happened, roughly how much was eaten and how much your dog weighs. If possible, take a remaining piece of the mushroom, wrapped in damp kitchen paper inside a paper bag, or take a photo. Do not give home remedies or induce vomiting yourself.

If you suspect poisoning, take your dog to a vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
