Can dogs eat spinach?

Yellow: with caution

Yes, but only occasionally and in small amounts. Spinach is non-toxic to dogs. However, it contains a lot of oxalic acid and is unsuitable for dogs prone to kidney or bladder stones.

Why it gets a yellow rating

Spinach has no entry in the ASPCA plant database. Veterinary-reviewed guidance from PetMD describes it as non-toxic but recommends small portions. The reason is oxalic acid: it can interfere with calcium absorption, and calcium oxalate is excreted through the kidneys. Healthy kidneys cope well with small amounts, and according to PetMD, a dog would need to eat a great deal before it became critical. Veterinary group VCA says dogs with calcium oxalate stones should not have oxalate-rich foods such as spinach, beetroot or green beans.

How to serve spinach safely

  • Steamed and chopped: According to the AKC, raw spinach is hard to digest. Steam briefly and chop finely.
  • Serve plain: Creamed spinach and spinach dip contain dairy products and fat, which PetMD says can irritate the stomach and contribute to pancreatitis.
  • Avoid canned spinach: Canned spinach is often heavily salted.
  • A pre-existing condition? If your dog has had urinary stones or kidney problems, consult your vet first.

What if your dog has eaten a lot of spinach?

According to PetMD, large amounts can significantly upset the stomach. Offer water, monitor your dog and make the next meal lighter. Call your vet if your dog vomits repeatedly, diarrhoea lasts beyond a day or your dog has kidney disease.

If you suspect poisoning, contact your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
