Can dogs eat cream cheese?

Frischkäse auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

Yes, but only a small dollop of the plain variety. The ASPCA poison control service lists small amounts of cheese among the snacks you can share. With cream cheese, the variety matters.

Why it gets a yellow rating

Cream cheese has two qualities that can cause problems for dogs. It is a dairy product, and according to the ASPCA, dogs have very little lactase to break down milk sugar. Traditional cream cheese is also fairly high in fat. The American Kennel Club warns that regularly feeding high-fat cheese can lead to weight gain and even pancreatitis. Many varieties also contain toxic ingredients.

What to keep in mind

  • Plain rather than herb-flavoured: Herb and garlic cream cheeses often contain onions, garlic or chives. According to the ASPCA, these alliums can damage red blood cells.
  • Avoid sweet varieties: Cream cheese spreads, cheesecake and desserts contain sugar and sometimes sweeteners such as xylitol.
  • Choose low-fat: A leaner variety is easier on your dog. According to the AKC, cottage cheese is lower in fat and lactose.
  • For hiding tablets: A tiny coating of cream cheese around the tablet is enough.

What if your dog has eaten too much?

If your dog has licked out half a tub of plain cream cheese, diarrhoea or vomiting may follow. Offer water and monitor your dog. Severe stomach pain, repeated vomiting or listlessness after fatty food are reasons to call the vet. If it was herb cream cheese containing onions or garlic, or a sweet product with xylitol, call your vet and keep the packaging handy.

If you suspect poisoning, contact your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
