Hungarian Wire-haired Pointer (Drótzörü Magyar Vizsla)

Drahthaar Vizsla als Wandbild im Stil Ölgemälde, Raum: heller Eingangsflur

A Hungarian Wire-haired Pointer (Drótzörü Magyar Vizsla) with a beard and eyebrows is recognisable from a distance. The FCI standard requires a more robust build than the short-haired relative and a coat whose harshness and density protect against weather and injuries.

FCI Group 7 (Pointing Dogs), Section 1 Continental Pointing Dogs (Braque type), Standard No. 239, with working trial (field and water trial)
Country of origin Hungary
Size (height at the withers) males 58 to 64 cm, females 54 to 60 cm
Weight not specified in the FCI standard
Life expectancy median 13.5 years in a UK analysis of 584,734 dogs (McMillan et al. 2024), with short-haired and wire-haired dogs analysed together
Coat wiry, close-fitting, dense and dull; outer coat 2 to 3 cm, dense water-repellent undercoat; beard, pronounced eyebrows and V-shaped brushes on the neck
Colours in the standard shades of russet gold, with slightly darker ears allowed; a small white chest or throat patch up to 5 cm and white toe markings are not faulty

A short-haired dog in a winter coat

According to the standard, the breed originated in the 1930s from crossing the short-haired Hungarian Pointer with the German Wire-haired Pointer. Apart from the coat and stronger build, the same breed characteristics apply as for the Hungarian Vizsla. Read about the German parent breed in the entry on the German Wire-haired Pointer.

Affectionate, but no heavy hand

The standard describes an affectionate, easily trained, responsive and self-confident dog, expressly noting that these dogs cannot tolerate rough handling. At work, they stay in contact with their person, search passionately and persistently and point superbly. According to the standard, their easy-going nature even allows them to live in a flat.

Fields, woodland and water trails

The requirements include a keen nose, firm pointing, reliable retrieving and great enthusiasm for water, even over difficult terrain and in extreme weather. Without hunting, tracking, gundog dummy training and swimming replace these tasks. Every day they need long outings and a job for their nose.

The standard says the tail may be shortened by a quarter as a precaution in countries without a docking ban. Undocked, it reaches the hock. In Germany, tail docking is generally prohibited under § 6 of the Animal Welfare Act, with exceptions only in individual cases.

What beard and wire coat need

The harsh outer coat and dense undercoat are easy to care for if brushed thoroughly once a week and loose hair plucked during shedding. The beard collects food and water; a damp cloth after meals keeps it clean.

What is known about health

In McMillan and colleagues’ large UK analysis, Vizslas reached a median lifespan of 13.5 years, compared with 12.0 for crossbreeds. However, short-haired and wire-haired dogs were combined, leaving no separate figure for the wire-haired variety (McMillan et al. 2024). We found no study specifically on the wire-haired breed. An inflammatory muscle disease has been described in the short-haired variety, beginning at an average age of 2.4 years in a case series of 77 dogs (Tauro et al. 2015). Whether wire-haired dogs are similarly affected remains unclear. Ask the breeder for the parents’ hip results and eye examinations; the standard excludes entropion, ectropion and distichiasis from breeding.

A good partner for

Hunters and anyone who enjoys spending long periods outdoors in all weather and wants a gentle dog needing kind, consistent guidance.

Difficulties arise if

the dog must spend many hours alone, daily life allows only short walks or training relies on pressure and a raised voice.
