West Highland White Terrier

West Highland White Terrier als Portrait auf einem Kissen am Fenster mit Meerblick

About 28 centimetres tall, yet the FCI standard credits it with a good helping of self-esteem. The Westie is small and powerfully built, with the expression of a terrier searching for vermin. Mistake this white dog for a soft toy and you underestimate it.

FCI Group 3 (Terriers), Section 2 Small-sized Terriers, Standard No. 85, without working trial
Country of origin Great Britain
Height at the withers Approx. 28 cm
Weight Not specified in the FCI standard
Life expectancy Median 13,4 years in a British analysis of 584.734 dogs (McMillan et al. 2024)
Coat Double coat; harsh outer coat approx. 5 cm long, without curls; fur-like, short, soft, dense undercoat
Colours according to the standard White

Confident on short legs

Small, active, game and hardy, watchful, cheerful, courageous and independent, yet friendly: the standard packs much into a few words. It gives no historical summary, only Great Britain as origin and terrier as use. The terrier heart quickly shows in everyday life. A Westie has opinions, devotedly follows mouse trails and needs training combining consistency and humour.

Power and agility in miniature

A deep chest, straight back and strong hindquarters: the standard describes a high degree of strength and agility combined. It manages longer walks well, alongside search and sniffing games, trick training or a digging area. It is no dog intended only for a handbag.

A white coat with harsh hair

The harsh outer coat over soft undercoat is usually hand-stripped, removing dead hair by hand. An open, soft coat is highly undesirable under the standard. The ears have short, velvety hair that the standard says should not be cut, and the tail must never be docked. Brush once or twice weekly between stripping appointments.

Teeth, ears and skin: what the data show

The best data source is a British analysis of 6.605 Westies in veterinary practices (O'Neill et al. 2019). Most common were gum disease at 15,7 per cent, ear infections at 10,6 per cent, overgrown nails at 7,2 per cent, allergic skin disease at 6,5 per cent and overweight at 6,1 per cent. Median lifespan was 13,4 years, matching the large analysis by McMillan and colleagues. Swedish insurance data showed an above-average risk of atopic dermatitis in Westies (Nødtvedt et al. 2006). Young Westies can also develop craniomandibular osteopathy, painful bone growth around the jaw, usually between four and eight months of age, which resolves spontaneously (Hytönen et al. 2016). Tooth brushing, ear checks and early investigation of itchy skin help most.

A Westie suits you if

you want a small, robust dog with character, enjoy the outdoors and accept grooming as a regular appointment. It gets on well with children who respect its boundaries.

Life becomes difficult if

you expect instant obedience, skin problems put you off or nobody has time for hand-stripping and dental care.

Video: how demanding a Westie really is

The video covers origins, hunting history and the white coat, then temperament, training, exercise and health, ending with a reality check for everyday life.
