Can dogs eat pears?

Birnen auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

Yes, but only the flesh. The American Kennel Club (AKC) describes pears as a healthy snack in moderation. Dogs should not eat the seeds because they contain traces of cyanide.

Why pears are marked yellow

According to the AKC, the flesh provides vitamins C and K, copper and fibre. The core is another matter: the seeds contain traces of cyanide and are toxic in larger amounts, and a dog could also choke on them. Pears have no separate entry in the ASPCA plant database. Because only part of the fruit is safe, we mark them yellow here.

How to serve pear safely

  • Remove the entire core: Cut out the seeds and stalk before sharing.
  • Bite-sized pieces: The AKC recommends small cubes and staying with your dog while they eat.
  • No tinned pears: Pears in tins or jars are full of sugar, including those packed in their own juice.
  • Do not toss over the leftovers: The nibbled core belongs in the bin, not your dog’s mouth.
  • Keep portions small: An occasional slice is fine; a whole pear is too much for a small dog.

What if your dog has eaten a core?

A single core is usually no reason to panic; the amount eaten and your dog’s size are what matter. If your dog has eaten several pears with the seeds, it is best to call your vet. According to the AKC, too much pear can upset the stomach. If loose stools persist or your dog seems weak, have them examined.

If you suspect poisoning, take your dog to a vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
