Can dogs eat pistachios?

Pistazien auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

Best avoided, although a single pistachio is not an emergency. The American Kennel Club’s (AKC) chief veterinarian says pistachios themselves are not toxic to dogs. Nevertheless, because of the risks of larger amounts, the AKC recommends avoiding them altogether.

Why pistachios get a yellow rating

According to the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center, nuts contain a lot of oil and fat. This can cause vomiting and diarrhoea and contribute to pancreatitis in some animals. Pistachios also usually come salted. Another risk is aflatoxins: according to the MSD Veterinary Manual, these mould toxins form on nuts, damage the liver and have been associated with deaths in dogs. These sources do not identify an inherent toxic effect for pistachios like that of macadamias. Hence the yellow rating.

What to watch out for

  • Dispose of the shells: Put empty shells in a bin with a lid. According to the AKC, both shells and whole nuts can get stuck in the throat.
  • Salted and seasoned: This is how pistachios are usually sold, and the worst option for your dog.
  • Musty smell? Throw away old, discoloured nuts.
  • Pistachio ice cream and baked goods: These add sugar, milk and sometimes chocolate.

What if your dog has eaten pistachios?

For a few nuts, keeping an eye on your dog is enough. If they have eaten a larger amount or many shells, the AKC recommends calling your vet or an emergency service straight away. Watch for diarrhoea, vomiting and loss of appetite. If your dog then seems lethargic or has abdominal pain, they need veterinary attention, as the AKC warns that pancreatitis can worsen quickly.

If you suspect poisoning, go straight to your vet or an emergency veterinary service.
