Can dogs eat strawberries?

Green: safe

Yes, dogs can eat strawberries. The ASPCA, the major American animal welfare organisation with its own poison control service, lists strawberries as non-toxic to dogs in its plant database.

Why strawberries are fine

Strawberries contain no substance known to be toxic to dogs. Many dogs enjoy them, especially chilled on a warm day. There is nothing wrong with offering one as an occasional small reward.

What to watch for

  • Wash them: Strawberries grow close to the ground. Wash them thoroughly before giving them to your dog.
  • Cut them small: Halve or quarter the berries for small dogs and puppies so they do not get stuck in the throat.
  • Fresh only: Strawberries in yoghurt, cakes, jam or desserts are off the menu. These often contain a lot of sugar and sometimes sweeteners such as xylitol, which is dangerous for dogs.
  • A snack, not a meal: Fruit contains sugar. Include snacks in the daily food allowance to help your dog maintain a healthy weight.

What if your dog has eaten too many?

If your dog has eaten a whole punnet, diarrhoea or stomach rumbling may follow. Offer water, keep an eye on your dog and make the next meal a little smaller. If diarrhoea persists, your dog seems weak or vomits, call your vet. For strawberry yoghurt, cake or sweets, always check the ingredients: if xylitol is listed, it is an emergency.

If you suspect poisoning, take your dog to a vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
