The name comes from a dog show. According to the FCI standard, the Airedale Show in Yorkshire gave the breed its name because it exhibited many terriers from the Wharfe, Calder and Aire valleys. Those water terriers became the largest of their whole group, also known as the King of Terriers.

Origins
The standard places the breed in Yorkshire. A fine nose made them versatile: tracking in Africa, India and Canada, helping the Red Cross in wartime, and serving police and military in Great Britain and Russia. They have little in common with the small earth dog people often imagine when thinking of terriers.
Temperament
The standard describes a dog poised on tiptoe with every movement: outgoing and confident, friendly, courageous and intelligent, always alert, unaggressive yet fearless. In everyday life, they notice everything, think for themselves and like testing whether the rules still apply today. With clear, kind training, they are reliable, entertaining companions.
Exercise and activity
An Airedale needs long daily outings and tasks for mind and nose. Tracking, mantrailing and varied obedience work suit them. A dog simply left to run in the garden becomes a bored terrier who finds their own entertainment.
Grooming
The hard, wiry coat stays that way only with hand-stripping: dead hair is plucked out several times a year. Clipping softens the coat and fades the colours. Between sessions, weekly brushing is enough, with more frequent checks of beard and paws.
Health
With a median of 12,0 years, the Airedale exactly matches crossbreeds in McMillan and colleagues’ analysis. Pay attention to lumps and skin changes. The Swiss cancer registry recorded 2.652 tumours per 100.000 dog-years in Airedales, benign and malignant combined, compared with 581 in crossbreeds. For melanoma, the breed was among the five highest rates at 261 per 100.000 dog-years, against 24 across all breeds (Dhein et al. 2024). Have new lumps checked early rather than waiting.
Who does the Airedale Terrier suit?
Active people and families with older children seeking a large, amusing dog with a mind of their own, who enjoy working together. Anyone who has already owned a terrier will soon feel at home.
Who is the breed less suited to?
People expecting constant obedience without argument, those with very little time each day, and anyone unwilling to budget time or money for hand-stripping.
