Dandie Dinmont Terrier

Dandie Dinmont Terrier als Wandbild im Stil Kohle-Sketch, Raum: gelbe Wohnküche

Pepper or mustard: the FCI standard recognises no third colour. Both names suit a dog itself named after a fictional character: Dandie Dinmont is a farmer in Walter Scott’s 1815 novel “Guy Mannering”, whose terriers are named Pepper and Mustard.

FCI Group 3 (Terriers), Section 2 Small-sized Terriers, Standard No. 168, without working trial
Country of origin Great Britain
Size (height at the withers) 20 to 28 cm; body length no more than twice the height, preferably 2,5 to 5 cm less
Weight 8 to 11 kg in good working condition, lower weights preferred
Life expectancy median 12,8 years among 179 dogs of the breed (McMillan et al. 2024)
Coat around 5 cm long, double: soft, linty undercoat and harder, crisp, non-wiry outer coat; head covered in very soft, silky hair
Colours in the standard pepper (blue-black to silver-grey, silvery-white topknot) or mustard (reddish brown to pale fawn, creamy-white topknot); some white on chest permitted

A large head on a long body

The standard paints an unusual picture: a large, strong head with big, intelligent eyes beneath a silky topknot, followed by a long, low, weasel-like body. The back is low at the shoulder and arches over the loin. The canine teeth should be exceptionally large for a small dog.

Sensitive, but independently minded

Game and keen to work, independent, highly intelligent, determined and persistent, yet sensitive, affectionate and dignified: that is the standard’s mixture. Harsh words hurt this dog, while pointless tasks are readily refused. Calm, clear rules work better than severity.

Exercise with the back in mind

Longer, relaxed walks and sniffing games suit it. A ramp or lifting is better than jumps from the sofa or car, and keeping it lean is essential rather than optional.

Topknot and pencilled coat

According to the standard, the coat should form fine pencils because the harder outer hair grows through the soft undercoat. Dead hair is therefore stripped rather than clipped. Comb the topknot and leg feathering several times a week.

Eye pressure and discs

At a median 12,8 years in McMillan and colleagues’ analysis, it was close to crossbreeds at 12,0. Glaucoma is a clear breed concern. Of 95 British Dandies whose drainage angles were examined, 22,1 per cent had moderate or severe malformation of the pectinate ligament, increasing with age (Oliver et al. 2016). Glaucoma in this breed usually appears only after seven years old (Ahonen et al. 2013). A red, painful eye needs a same-day vet visit. For the back, a study of 700 dogs found disc extrusion more common with a longer body relative to height and higher weight; the authors cite the Dandie standard as an example of extreme proportions (Packer et al. 2013).

A good match if

you want a calm, affectionate companion with character, enjoy walks and see grooming as time together.

Better not if

you want a sporty dog for jumping and speed, or are reluctant to watch weight and eyes closely.

It shares the long back with the Dachshund, while another long, heavily coated Scot appears in the Skye Terrier entry. Find out whether a Dandie is right for you in the breed quiz ; our book goes deeper: “Welcher Hund passt WIRKLICH zu dir?” (book in German). For the first weeks with a puppy, there is the free Puppy Starter Pack. That pepper or mustard topknot looks especially striking as a magazine cover on canvas or in our dog portraits from your own photo.
