Polish Lowland Sheepdog (Polski Owczarek Nizinny)

Polnischer Niederungshütehund als Wandbild im Stil Ölgemälde, Raum: salbeifarbenes Arbeitszimmer

When a PON walks slowly, it often moves both legs on one side together. The FCI standard explicitly mentions this pacing gait at a slow walk as a common breed tendency. At a trot, however, the Polish Lowland Sheepdog (Polski Owczarek Nizinny) moves lightly and covers ground.

Coat coarse, dense, thick and abundant, straight or slightly wavy, with soft undercoat; forehead hair falls forwards

A herding dog of the Polish plains

The standard is silent on history. It describes the PON as an easily managed herding and watch dog that proves an excellent companion after moving to the city. The FCI has definitively recognised the breed since 5 October 1963. Another Polish sheepdog is the Polish Tatra Sheepdog from the southern mountains.

A mind with a good memory

Lively but moderate, watchful, agile and intelligent, with a good memory and quick understanding: that is the standard’s description. This memory works both ways. It remembers what you let slide as well as a carefully taught cue. A watchful herding dog often greets strangers initially with distance and barking, so early, calm familiarisation with visitors is worthwhile.

Exercise in every weather

The standard describes resistance to adverse weather, so rain and cold are no excuse to skip a walk. Alongside daily walks, it needs mental work: herding training, treibball, agility, scent games or tricks.

Shaggy hair takes time

The coarse, dense coat with soft undercoat is as attractive as the standard describes only when well groomed. Plan thorough combing down to the skin at least weekly, otherwise wool mats at ears, armpits and breeches. For the tail, the standard permits naturally short tails, long tails and very short docked tails. In Germany, docking is generally prohibited under Section 6 of the German Animal Welfare Act.

What studies show about the PON

In McMillan and colleagues’ British analysis, Polish Lowland Sheepdogs reached a median 13,2 years, compared with 12,0 for crossbreeds. However, this rests on only 24 deaths, with a confidence interval from 12,3 to 14,8 years. In Swedish eye examinations, 16 of 82 dogs had progressive retinal atrophy, a late-onset retinal degeneration. Almost all tested affected dogs carried the rcd4 mutation (Svensson et al. 2016), for which a genetic test exists. A pedigree analysis of 8.628 dogs found high inbreeding and an effective population size of only 22 (Michels and Distl 2020). Ask about genetic testing, eye results and the inbreeding coefficient.

A good partner for

people and families seeking a medium-sized, robust dog with wit and watchfulness, who enjoy the outdoors and treat grooming as a regular duty. A committed first-time owner can manage with consistent, kind training.

Less suitable for

anyone seeking an easy-care dog, expecting no opinions or having little time for training and activities.

Also shaggy with hair over their eyes are the Bearded Collie and the Schapendoes. The breed quiz shows which dog fits your life; our book offers detailed help: “Welcher Hund passt WIRKLICH zu dir?” (book in German). For the first weeks with a puppy, there is the free Puppy Starter Pack. Find your PON with its shaggy fringe as a digital artwork for instant download or among our dog portraits from your own photo.
