Presidents of the republic kept it, as did farmers who relied on it to put meat on the table. This is the FCI standard’s account of the Colombian Fino Hound (Sabueso Fino Colombiano), a scent hound that has tracked game in Colombia for over 200 years. It has appeared in the FCI nomenclature since February 2026, initially with provisional recognition.

Scent hounds from three continents
According to the standard, its ancestors were packs of scent hounds and some pointing dogs brought to Colombia from continental Europe, Great Britain and North America since colonial times. The dog adapted to mountains, lowlands and very different climates. To see what a purely North American scent hound looks like, read the entry on the American Foxhound.
New to the FCI
The FCI provisionally recognised it on 11.02.2026, with the standard written in Spanish. This stage has consequences at shows: until definitive recognition, the breed cannot receive a CACIB. World Winner and Section Winner titles remain possible, and every pedigree must display the FCI logo.
Stubborn outdoors, affectionate indoors
The standard sums up its temperament unusually briefly: stubborn when hunting, loving at home, an excellent companion. It can live in a group with other dogs and is friendly towards strangers. The text describes a typical baying scent hound, so expect a voice that wants to be heard.
Ears reaching the nose tip
The long drop ears must reach at least the nose tip when extended, preferably beyond. Ears like these catch grass awns and moisture, so a quick check after every walk through long grass is sensible. Smooth coats need little care; rough coats with undercoat need a weekly brush.
Trail work rather than ball throwing
The standard lists tracking, hunting and companionship as its uses. A dog with this stamina wants long periods outdoors daily, with work for its nose: tracking, mantrailing and woodland search games. Its stubborn commitment to a trail makes recall training essential from the start, usually along with a long line.
What can be said about its health
Little. Europe PMC lists no study of the breed, and it is absent from the British analysis by McMillan and colleagues (2024). The standard itself is noteworthy: ectropion and entropion, outward- and inward-rolling eyelids, disqualify; excessively loose skin and heavily hanging lips are serious faults; merle is prohibited. The standard therefore aims to avoid exaggeration.
Who it suits
It is in good hands with an active family with a garden, spending plenty of time outdoors and wanting a sociable dog, including alongside a second dog. Life is harder in a poorly soundproofed flat or if nobody has time for daily scent work. A dog familiar with Colombia’s mountains needs trails, rather than a circuit of the block.
The breed quiz can show whether a scent hound with a big voice suits you; our book explores further: “Welcher Hund passt WIRKLICH zu dir?” (book in German).
