Welsh Corgi Pembroke

Welsh Corgi im 3D-Cartoon-Stil als Tierportrait auf Leinwand

Short legs, a foxlike head and upright ears: the Welsh Corgi Pembroke looks like a soft toy, yet is a working dog. The FCI standard requires a low-set, powerful dog displaying substance and stamina in a small space. The FCI places it among cattle dogs, something you notice as soon as anything moves.

FCI Group 1 (Sheepdogs and Cattledogs, except Swiss Cattledogs), Section 2 Cattledogs, Standard No. 39, without working trial
Country of origin Great Britain
Height at the withers Approx. 25 to 30 cm
Weight Males 10 to 12 kg, females 9 to 11 kg
Life expectancy Median 13,2 years in a British analysis of 584.734 dogs (McMillan et al. 2024)
Coat Medium-length and straight with dense undercoat, never soft, wavy or wiry
Colours according to the standard Solid red, sable, fawn, or black and tan, with or without white markings on legs, chest and neck; a little white on head and muzzle permitted

Origins

The current FCI standard omits a historical summary and gives only the essentials: Great Britain as origin, herding as use, classification among cattle dogs. The tail was formerly usually docked short. Today the standard describes the natural tail, and natural bobtails also occur. In Germany, docking is generally prohibited under Section 6 of the German Animal Welfare Act. Its relative, the Welsh Corgi Cardigan, is listed by the FCI as a separate breed, No. 38.

Temperament

Bold, keen to work, outgoing and friendly, never nervous or aggressive: this is the standard’s description. It is attentive, learns quickly and has opinions about many things. Without a task, it finds one, sometimes a family member’s heel.

Exercise and activities

It needs more than those legs suggest: longer daily walks, plus trick training, scent work or herding games with a ball. Mental work often meets its needs better than distance alone.

Grooming

The medium-length coat and dense undercoat shed heavily, even more during shedding season. Brushing two or three times a week keeps it manageable.

Health

One concern mainly affects older Corgis: degenerative myelopathy, a progressive spinal-cord disease usually beginning from eight years of age with unsteadiness behind. The responsible SOD1 gene mutation was discovered in 2009 in 38 affected Pembroke Corgis (Awano et al. 2009). Dogs with two copies have a considerably higher risk than those with one (Zeng et al. 2014). Genetic testing of the parents is therefore part of responsible breeding. The good news: with a median of 13,2 years, the Pembroke outlives crossbreeds at 12,0 years in McMillan and colleagues’ analysis.

Who does the Welsh Corgi Pembroke suit?

Active people and families wanting a cheerful, clever dog on short legs, who enjoy training and take hair on the floor in their stride.

Who should consider another breed?

Anyone expecting a dog without opinions, and households with no time for activities. A bored cattle dog finds work for itself.
