Can dogs eat mango?

Mango auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

Yes, your dog can eat the flesh, but not the stone or skin. The American Kennel Club (AKC), the major US dog breeding organisation, describes mango as safe for dogs provided it is peeled, the stone is removed and it is offered only as an occasional treat.

Why mango is marked yellow

The problem lies in the middle of the fruit. According to the AKC, the hard, flat stone can be swallowed, get stuck in the throat or lodge in the digestive tract. It also contains small amounts of cyanide. Dogs can eat the skin, but it is difficult to digest. Mango is not listed in the ASPCA plant database, the first reference point for fruit. This assessment therefore relies on the AKC.

How to serve mango safely

  • Peel and remove the stone: Cut the flesh well away from the stone and remove all the skin.
  • Small cubes: Cut even soft, ripe mango into small pieces so your dog does not choke.
  • Watch the sugar: Mango is sweet. According to the AKC, it should be only an occasional treat for overweight dogs.
  • Dispose of the stone: Throw the stone away somewhere your dog cannot reach the rubbish.

What if your dog has swallowed the stone?

A mango stone may pass through the intestines without problems, but that is not guaranteed. Watch your dog closely over the next few days. According to the AKC, call your vet immediately if your dog eats less than usual or refuses food. With small dogs, it is worth calling straight away because the stone is enormous in proportion to their size. If your dog has simply eaten too much flesh, stomach ache and diarrhoea are possible.

If you suspect poisoning, take your dog to a vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
