Green: safe
Yes, dogs can eat quinoa, cooked and unseasoned. According to the American Kennel Club, quinoa is generally fine for dogs and is used in some high-quality dry foods.

Why quinoa is fine
Quinoa is a plant seed used like a grain. According to the AKC, it sometimes replaces maize, wheat or soya in dog food. The plant produces saponins, bitter compounds that deter insects and could irritate the gut. However, the AKC says the amount in quinoa is usually too small to cause problems. To be safe, wash the seeds thoroughly before cooking, which rinses away most of it. Quinoa is not listed in the ASPCA plant database.
How to serve quinoa safely
- Wash and cook: Rinse thoroughly and cook until soft. It is easier to digest when cooked.
- Do not share from your plate: Human dishes often contain salt, garlic or onion. The AKC says these ingredients can be toxic to dogs.
- Start small: Mix only a little into the food the first time.
- Count it towards the daily allowance: Like rice or potatoes, quinoa provides energy and counts towards the daily allowance.
What if your dog cannot tolerate quinoa?
Some dogs have difficulty digesting quinoa. If your dog vomits or develops diarrhoea or constipation afterwards, the AKC advises leaving it out in future. Call your vet if diarrhoea persists, your dog seems weak or will not eat. If your dog has eaten quinoa salad with onions or garlic, mention that immediately on the phone.
If you suspect poisoning, contact your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
