Yellow: with caution
Yes, but cooked and plain. The American Kennel Club (AKC) says porridge is good for dogs in moderation, but recommends cooking it with water rather than sprinkling raw oats over their food.
Why oats get a yellow rating
Oats provide plenty of fibre, B vitamins and linoleic acid. According to the AKC, they can be an alternative for dogs that do not tolerate wheat well. Here, yellow does not mean toxic: it means they need preparation. Raw oats are harder to digest, and too much fibre at once can cause diarrhoea and vomiting.
How to serve oats
- Cook with water: According to the ASPCA, few dogs tolerate milk because they lack the enzyme needed to digest milk sugar.
- Let it cool: Porridge that is too hot can burn the mouth.
- Add nothing: No sugar, butter or chocolate. According to the ASPCA, raisins can damage the kidneys.
- No flavoured instant porridge: It often contains sugar and sometimes sweeteners such as xylitol.
- Choose rolled or thick-cut oats: According to the AKC, highly processed instant oats lose nutritional value.
What if your dog eats too much?
A large serving of porridge can cause diarrhoea, vomiting or a bloated abdomen. The AKC even describes bloat as potentially life-threatening. If your dog’s abdomen looks swollen or they are visibly unwell, go to the vet immediately. Also call if they have eaten muesli containing raisins or chocolate.
If you suspect poisoning, go straight to your vet or an emergency veterinary service.
