Can dogs eat peaches?

Pfirsiche auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

Yes, but only the flesh with the stone removed. Fresh peach pieces can be a snack for dogs. The stone, stem and leaves should not be included.

Why peaches get a yellow rating

The ASPCA lists the peach tree as toxic to dogs. Stems, leaves and seeds contain cyanogenic glycosides, particularly in wilting leaves. Possible signs include brick-red mucous membranes, dilated pupils, difficulty breathing and panting. The Pet Poison Helpline says cyanide is only released when a stone is thoroughly chewed, which is rare in dogs. The bigger problem is often the stone itself: in small dogs, it can become lodged in the digestive tract.

What to watch out for

  • Remove the stone: Halve the peach and put the stone straight in the bin, rather than an open bucket.
  • Fresh rather than canned: Canned or dried peaches often contain a lot of sugar.
  • Watch the garden: In summer, fruit complete with stones and leaves lies beneath peach trees. It is best to pick it up.
  • Count it towards the daily total: Peach is sweet and counts towards the daily food allowance.

What if your dog swallows a stone?

Call your vet, especially for small dogs. Explain how big the stone was, when it happened and how much your dog weighs. Repeated vomiting, loss of appetite or failure to pass stools may indicate an intestinal blockage. Seek help immediately for difficulty breathing or unusually red mucous membranes.

If you suspect poisoning, go straight to your vet or an emergency veterinary service.
