Russian Black Terrier (Russkiy Tchiorny Terrier)

Russischer Schwarzer Terrier als Wandbild im Stil Ölgemälde, Raum: salbeifarbenes Arbeitszimmer

It is a terrier mainly in name. According to the FCI standard, the Russian Black Terrier developed from around 1940 under the supervision of a military dog-training school near Moscow. The goal was a large, friendly, obedient working dog able to tolerate any climate.

Bred at the Red Star kennel

According to the standard, the dogs lived at the “Red Star” kennel. The main ancestor is considered to be the Giant Schnauzer (Riesenschnauzer), with contributions from the Rottweiler, Airedale Terrier and Newfoundland.

Composed until needed

Dignified and self-confident: when the situation demands, the standard says it immediately moves to defend and quickly calms again once danger passes. It also calls the dog amiable, clever and easily trained. It needs plenty of early contact with people, dogs and everyday stimuli, alongside calm, clear training.

Stamina needs an outlet

The standard requires great endurance and an energetic, long-striding trot. Long walks, obedience, tracking or mantrailing meet its needs.

Beard, brows and plenty of coat

The double coat takes work. The standard requires correct brushing and a trim that is never excessively decorative. Plan to brush several times a week and use scissors or a groomer every few weeks; the beard collects water and food. In its country of origin, the tail is traditionally docked, but the standard gives equal standing to a natural tail. In Germany, docking is generally prohibited under Section 6 of the German Animal Welfare Act. Here it keeps its natural tail.

Urinary stones, tumours and nerves

With a median of 10,9 years, the 163 dogs of this breed in McMillan and colleagues’ analysis lived slightly less long than crossbreeds at 12,0 years. One inherited concern is hyperuricosuria, in which excess uric acid in the urine promotes urate stones: among 101 dogs tested, the authors estimated around 27 per cent of the breed to be affected; a genetic test helps guide breeding choices (Karmi et al. 2010). In the Swiss cancer registry, there were 2.679 tumours per 100.000 dog-years, including benign tumours, compared with 581 in crossbreeds. For melanoma, the breed had the highest rate at 345, against an average of 24 (Dhein et al. 2024). There is also a recessively inherited neurological disease in young dogs, with laryngeal paralysis and eye abnormalities, caused by a mutation in the RAB3GAP1 gene (Mhlanga-Mutangadura et al. 2016).

Who it suits

Experienced dog owners with space, time and enthusiasm for working together, able to guide a large companion with protective instincts safely and willing to groom. Ask breeders for both parents’ genetic tests.

Who should consider another breed

Anyone wanting a low-maintenance dog, people in small flats without exercise opportunities, and anyone unable to hold a watchful 50-kilo dog safely on the lead.
