Tibetan Spaniel

Tibet-Spaniel als Wandbild im Stil Aquarell, Raum: blaues Arbeitszimmer

15,2 years: that was the median lifespan for Tibetan Spaniels in a British analysis of over half a million dogs, compared with 12,0 years for crossbreeds. Choosing this little dog with a mane therefore means planning for a long time together.

A spaniel that never hunted

Despite the name, the FCI lists it as a companion dog, alongside the Tibetan Terrier and the Lhasa Apso in the Tibetan breeds section. The standard gives Tibet as the origin and Great Britain as the patronage country, without a historical summary. It describes a small, active, alert dog, slightly longer than tall, with a proudly carried head.

Cheerful, watchful and independently minded

Cheerful and self-confident, highly intelligent, reserved with strangers, watchful, loyal but independent: this is what the standard says. It reliably announces visitors and does not obey on principle. Kind consistency and short exercises make learning enjoyable; pressure achieves little.

Quick legs, modest demands

Its movement should be quick, straight and free. Daily walks, sniffing games and small tricks keep it content; many enjoy dog sports on a small scale. It is no all-day hiking dog, but neither is it a sofa dog needing nothing to do.

Mane, shawl and feathering

The standard describes a mane or “shawl” of longer hair around the neck, more pronounced in males. Ears, legs, tail and hindquarters are feathered, and hair between the toes often grows beyond the feet. Brushing once or twice weekly and keeping hair beneath the pads short is usually all the coat needs.

Retina and dental cysts

British researchers found a FAM161A gene mutation responsible for one form of progressive retinal atrophy, which causes blindness (Downs and Mellersh 2014). It explained 22 of 35 cases examined; 15 per cent of healthy control dogs carried it. A clear genetic test therefore does not rule out PRA completely. At a Finnish dental clinic, 58 of 105 Tibetan Spaniels treated had a cyst around an unerupted tooth, usually the first lower premolar (Vesterinen et al. 2024). If a young dog is missing a tooth, ask your vet about an X-ray.

A good partner for you if

you want a small, alert dog that enjoys accompanying you and settles quietly at home. It also suits patient beginners and families with considerate children.

Less suitable if

barking door guardians bother you, you expect unquestioning obedience or want a dog happy to sit on strangers’ laps.
