Colouring horses: tips for horse lovers young and old

Horses are a favourite subject for many children, and with good reason: the flowing mane, the large eyes, the landscape around them. The Haflinger's colours are almost decided for you: a golden-brown coat and a pale mane. You can still colour it as a grey or black horse if you prefer. The Icelandic horse with its thick mane suits anyone who enjoys colouring lots of fine lines. The mare and foal are the calmest of the three pictures and work well for younger children.

Mane, coat and background

A mane looks lively when you use more than one colour. Two or three shades of the same colour, from light to dark, are enough. For the coat, start with the pale base colour, then add darker areas on the belly, legs and neck. The flowers, mountains and meadow in the background can be colourful, bringing the horse into focus even more.

Paper and printing

For coloured pencils, 80 g/m² printer paper is enough. For felt-tip pens and fineliners, paper of at least 120 g/m² is better. Print the PDF at actual size. A finished picture folds nicely into a card to give to friends at the stable.

Discovering horse breeds

Haflinger, Icelandic horse, mare with foal: even these three pictures show how different horses can be. The Haflinger is a strong, golden horse from the Alps; the Icelandic horse is a hardy northern horse with a thick mane and its own gait, the tölt. If your child asks why the Icelandic horse looks so shaggy, you already have your next topic of conversation. Perhaps it will inspire a wish to see a real horse on your next outing. Many riding stables and horse farms welcome visitors if you ask beforehand.
