Continental Bulldog

Continental Bulldog, mittelgroß, athletisch, rot mit Weiß, auf einer Wiese

Breathing silently, even in a fast trot or gallop: the FCI standard explicitly requires this of the Continental Bulldog, with audible breathing leading to disqualification. This Swiss breed aims for freer breathing than its English model. Studies so far provide only limited evidence of how well that succeeds.

FCI Group 2 (Pinscher and Schnauzer, Molossoid and Swiss Mountain and Cattle Dogs), Section 2.1 Molossoid breeds, mastiff type, Standard No. 369, without working trial, provisionally recognised by the FCI
Country of origin Switzerland
Size (height at the withers) Males 42 to 50 cm, females 40 to 48 cm
Weight Males 30 kg, females 25 kg; overall approximately 20 to 30 kg depending on size
Life expectancy no reliable study figure found (N/A)
Coat outer coat short, dense, smooth and glossy, not bristly; undercoat short, dense and fine, and may be absent
Colours in the standard fawn from sandy to red, brindle or black, each with or without white markings or a dark mask; also white with or without markings in these colours

A Bulldog reconsidered

According to the standard, the aim was a medium-sized Bulldog. Crosses of English Bulldogs and Old English Bulldogs produced a distinct breed close to the original Bulldog type, named to distinguish it from the English Bulldog. A genetic study of the English Bulldog also sees it as a response to strict Swiss animal welfare law (Pedersen et al. 2016). Its intended role is companion and family dog.

Provisionally recognised by the FCI since 2022

The FCI provisionally recognised it on 30.03.2022. Until definitive recognition, these breeds cannot receive CACIB certificates towards the International Beauty Champion title. According to the FCI, they can still become World and Section Winners, and their pedigrees carry the FCI logo.

What the standard requires against breathing problems

Large, well-opened nostrils. A muzzle one third of head length, with one quarter tolerated and anything shorter disqualifying. Entropion and ectropion are disqualifying faults; an excessively large nose fold is a serious fault. No visible eye white, no body or leg wrinkles.

What studies show so far

A large health study specifically on this breed is lacking. A British study of 700 dogs found brachycephalic obstructive airway syndrome (BOAS) only in dogs whose muzzles were shorter than half their skull length; excess weight and a thick neck increased risk further (Packer et al. 2015). One third of head length is precisely at that boundary, with the tolerance below it. The Finnish breed club required a parental breathing test before breeding (Lilja-Maula et al. 2024). Among 490 Swiss urinary stones, Continental Bulldogs had an increased risk of urate stones (Brandenberger-Schenk et al. 2015). There is no reliable lifespan figure.

Friendly, alert and keen to join in

Attentive, confident and friendly, neither aggressive nor shy, and agile with stamina: that is the standard’s description. Search games and easy walks suit it, and the short coat needs only a rubber brush. Keep it lean and shaded in hot weather.

When it may suit you

If you seek a sociable, medium-sized family dog and insist on breathing tests and eye results for both parents.

When to choose differently

If snoring is part of Bulldog charm to you, or you do not want to see the parents.

If you want a friendly, medium-sized dog with a normal-length muzzle, consider the Standard Schnauzer (Schnauzer) or Kromfohrländer; find every breed in the Dog Breed Encyclopedia. Shelters and animal welfare organisations also rehome Bulldog-type dogs. For the first weeks, there is the free Puppy Starter Pack.
