Deutsch Stichelhaar

Deutsch Stichelhaar als Wandbild im Stil Royal mit kurzer Uniform, Raum: terrakottafarbenes Wohnzimmer

A grim appearance is required, says the FCI standard: bushy eyebrows arch diagonally outwards, giving the Deutsch Stichelhaar a stern look. A few lines later, the same text describes a very different inner nature: balanced, calm and controlled. Meet this dog and you soon discover which part matters.

FCI Group 7 (Pointing Dogs), Section 1.1 Continental Pointing Dogs, Braque type, Standard No. 232, with working trial
Country of origin Germany
Size (height at the withers) males 60 to 70 cm, females 58 to 68 cm
Weight not specified in the FCI standard
Life expectancy no separate study figure found (N/A); McMillan et al. 2024 includes it only in a combined group with German Wire-haired and German Long-haired Pointing Dogs (median 13.0 years)
Coat firm, harsh and bristly on the body, around 4 cm long, with undercoat often barely visible; moderate beard and bushy eyebrows
Colours in the standard brown with or without a white chest mark; brown roan or light roan, each with or without brown patches

Rediscovered rather than reinvented

The standard calls this the oldest German rough-haired pointing dog. In 1888, cynologist Hans von Kadisch demonstrated that the bristle-haired bird dog was the rough-coated form of the German pointing dog, rather than a variety of the German Short-haired Pointing Dog. Breeding used the few survivors remaining in the country. The “Club Stichelhaar” began in 1892, becoming “Verein Deutsch Stichelhaar” in 1976, rejecting English-breed crosses from the outset. Later, the Stichelhaar contributed elsewhere: the German Wire-haired Pointing Dog standard lists it among foundation types alongside the Pudelpointer.

What the standard wants in temperament

Balanced, calm, robust and brave but controlled, neither shy nor aggressive. The text is strict about exclusions: temperament weakness, gun-shyness, fear of game, aggression and biting lead to disqualification. The aim is a steady-nerved dog who settles indoors after outdoor work.

Easy handling does not mean undemanding

The standard describes the purpose as a versatile, easy-to-handle working gundog. Easy handling describes cooperation rather than low needs. A large pointing dog with a working trial wants to search, point, retrieve and swim. Without hunting, tracking, dummy training and extensive hikes are the minimum.

Bristles rather than plush

Soft or semi-soft hair, except beard and eyebrows, disqualifies a Stichelhaar. Preserve the harsh texture by plucking dead hair rather than clipping, and check for grass awns and ticks after fieldwork. The standard allows a natural tail in countries prohibiting docking, reaching the hock. Germany is one of them: docking is generally prohibited under Section 6 of the German Animal Welfare Act.

Few data for a rare breed

A search of Europe PMC found no separate health studies. McMillan and colleagues’ UK analysis groups the breed with the German Wire-haired Pointing Dog, giving a combined median of 13.0 years; this is not established for Stichelhaar alone. The standard is clear about eyelids: ectropion and entropion, outward- or inward-rolling lids, are disqualifying. Ask the breeder for both parents’ examination findings.

A dog for hunters

Best with hunters or people seriously pursuing dog sports involving scent and water, experienced with gundogs and with room for a large, powerful dog.

Less suitable for

First-time owners without a hunting plan, city flats and homes where the dog waits for hours. A breed preserved pure by a club for over 130 years deserves everyday life fitting its origins.

Assess whether a large working gundog is right for you through the breed quiz and thoroughly with our book “Which Dog REALLY Suits You?” (book in German). For early puppyhood, there is the free Puppy Starter Pack. Beard and eyebrows also look good in a picture, perhaps as a digital artwork or among our dog portraits.
