Miniature American Shepherd

Miniature American Shepherd als Wandbild im Stil Pop-Art, Raum: salbeifarbenes Arbeitszimmer

Its career took off in the passenger seat. Riders took this little herding dog to horse shows because it was clever, loyal and conveniently sized, and that is how it became known across the USA, according to the FCI standard. Today, the Miniature American Shepherd feels as at home on a ranch as in a city.

FCI Group 1 (Sheepdogs and Cattledogs), Section 1 Sheepdogs, Standard No. 367, without working trial, provisionally recognised by the FCI
Country of origin USA (patronage: Hungary)
Size (height at the withers) Males 35,5 to 46 cm, females 33 to 43,5 cm
Weight not specified in the FCI standard (healthy weight according to size, sex and substance)
Life expectancy no reliable study figure found (N/A)
Coat medium length, straight to wavy, weather-resistant; undercoat varies with climate; moderate feathering, more pronounced mane in males
Colours in the standard blue merle, black, red merle (liver merle), red (liver), each with or without tan and white markings; white must not predominate on head; white body patches disqualify

From little Aussie to a separate breed

In the late 1960s, Californian breeders deliberately paired small Australian Shepherds to preserve size, temperament and intelligence. The dogs were first registered in 1980, then as Miniature Australian Shepherds. In May 2011, the breed entered the American Kennel Club’s Foundation Stock Service under its present name. It herded sheep and goats but, according to the standard, can also handle larger livestock.

What “provisionally recognised” means here

The FCI has listed the Miniature American Shepherd as provisionally recognised since 04.09.2019, under Hungarian patronage. Until definitive recognition, the FCI says such dogs cannot win a CACIB, but may gain titles such as World or Section Winner.

Watchful, trainable and loyal to its family

The standard calls it first and foremost a working dog with strong herding and guarding instincts, trainable and enthusiastic about its work. Reserved with strangers but not shy, it is protective, friendly and loyal within the family. Small does not mean undemanding here: it needs as much mental work as its larger relative.

Training, coat and tail

Agility, obedience, treibball and tricks suit it, as does learning to switch off afterwards. Brush the medium-length coat once or twice weekly. The standard prefers a docked or naturally short tail. In Germany, docking is generally prohibited under Section 6 of the German Animal Welfare Act. Here, it keeps the tail it was born with.

Choose merle thoughtfully

The standard allows merle but does not require it. The pairing matters: in a study of 153 merle dogs of various breeds, 0,9 per cent of single merles were deaf in both ears, compared with 15 per cent of double merles, with another 10 per cent deaf in one ear (Strain et al. 2009). Responsible pairing therefore means merle with solid colour, never merle with merle.

MDR1 and further genetic tests

Washington State University gives an MDR1 mutation frequency of approximately 50 per cent for the Mini Australian Shepherd, this breed’s predecessor. Affected dogs tolerate certain medicines poorly; a genetic test provides clarity. We found no reliable study figure for life expectancy.

Who it suits, and who it does not

It suits active people and families seeking a conveniently sized, sporty companion with a herding dog’s mind. It is less suited to households with little time, people unwilling to guide guarding and barking, and anyone expecting a lapdog.

To test whether a little herding dog with a big mind suits you, try the breed quiz; our book offers more: “Welcher Hund passt WIRKLICH zu dir?” (book in German). For the first weeks with a puppy, there is the free Puppy Starter Pack. Bring home your Mini with merle or tan markings as a dog portrait from your own photo or a poster in a wooden frame.
