Can dogs eat pomegranate?

Yellow: with caution

It is best avoided. According to the American Kennel Club, pomegranate is not toxic to dogs. Nevertheless, the AKC’s chief veterinarian advises against feeding it.

Why pomegranate gets a yellow rating

The juicy seeds are the part of a pomegranate we eat. Yet according to the AKC, dogs struggle to break them down. Even a moderate amount can cause vomiting and diarrhoea, and the seeds can obstruct the digestive tract. Pieces of the leathery peel and stem pose a particular risk of intestinal blockage for small dogs. Pomegranate is not listed in the ASPCA’s plant database. With only one specialist source available, and a fruit that is non-toxic but awkward to feed, it gets a yellow rating here.

What to watch out for

  • Dispose of the peel safely: After removing the seeds, put the peel and stem in a bin with a lid, rather than on a compost heap your dog can reach.
  • Chocolate-covered seeds: Chocolate-covered pomegranate seeds are doubly off limits, as chocolate is toxic to dogs.
  • No juice from the table: Shop-bought juices and desserts often contain a lot of sugar.
  • Choose a different fruit: A piece of banana or apple with the core removed is a simpler snack.

What if your dog has eaten pomegranate?

A few dropped seeds are usually no cause for alarm, but still keep an eye on your dog. If they have eaten peel, stem or a lot of seeds, or got hold of chocolate-covered seeds, the AKC recommends calling your vet straight away, or an emergency service outside opening hours. Do not wait if your dog vomits, has diarrhoea or cannot pass stools.

If you suspect poisoning, go straight to your vet or an emergency veterinary service.
