Blue Gascony Griffon (Griffon Bleu de Gascogne)

Griffon Bleu de Gascogne als Wandbild im Stil Kohle-Sketch, Raum: altrosafarbenes Schlafzimmer

One dog from two: according to the FCI standard, the Blue Gascony Griffon (Griffon Bleu de Gascogne) developed by crossing a medium-sized blue Gascony hound with a rough-haired griffon. The result is a strong, shaggy hunter whose build falls precisely between its two founding types.

FCI Group 6 (Scent hounds and related breeds), Section 1.2 Medium-sized scent hounds, Standard No. 32, with working trial
Country of origin France
Size (height at the withers) Males 50 to 57 cm, females 48 to 55 cm
Weight not specified in the FCI standard
Life expectancy no reliable study figure found (N/A)
Coat hard, rough and shaggy, slightly shorter on head, very short and close-fitting on ears
Colours in the standard entirely black-and-white mottled with a slate-blue appearance, with or without black patches; black patches on head sides, tan spots above eyes, traces of tan on cheeks, lips, ears, legs and beneath tail

Almost vanished, then returned

The standard describes ancient Pyrenean origins. The breed had almost disappeared from official dog breeding but is now undergoing a strong revival. This versatile dog hunts hare with the gun and, thanks to its fine nose, follows wild-boar trails too. Meet smooth-coated relatives in the Grand Bleu de Gascogne and Petit Bleu de Gascogne entries, and the short-legged form in the Blue Gascony Basset (Basset Bleu de Gascogne) entry.

Lively yet cuddly

A fine nose, good voice, thorough searching and plenty of enthusiasm: that is the standard’s summary of behaviour. It calls the temperament alert, even lively, but affectionate. Fearfulness is a fault; aggression disqualifies. Indoors, this is often a friendly companion, while outdoors the nose quickly takes command.

Work for a wild-boar nose

The FCI requires a working trial, so this is a hunting working dog. Non-hunters must provide long outdoor routes, tracking on a long line or mantrailing. Short circuits of the block are not enough. Build recall early and patiently; off-lead freedom is appropriate only where no game crosses its trail.

Beard, brows and harsh coat

The hard, shaggy hair is robust and needs little work: brush thoroughly weekly, pluck dead hair and remove burrs after outings. The standard says bushy eyebrows must not cover the eyes. Inspect beard and ears after meals and wet days.

What research does not yet know

We found no study giving disease rates for this rare breed. McMillan and colleagues’ large British longevity analysis includes it only in the name list, without analysis. A lifespan therefore cannot reliably be given. The standard requires only functionally and clinically healthy dogs to breed. Ask the breed club which examinations the parents had and request the results.

Where it fits, and where it does not

A good match for hunters and people outdoors daily who love scent work and want to live with a loud, enthusiastic dog. Difficult in a poorly soundproofed flat, with much time alone or an expectation of reliable off-lead walking beside you. Guide its enthusiasm and you gain a shaggy partner with a surprisingly soft centre.

Find out whether an eager scent hound fits your daily life with the breed quiz ; our book offers more detailed help: “Welcher Hund passt WIRKLICH zu dir?” (book in German). For the first weeks with a young dog, there is the free Puppy Starter Pack. That shaggy beard looks striking on a magazine cover on canvas, with other styles in our dog portraits.
