Spanish Greyhound (Galgo Español)

Galgo Español als Wandbild im Stil Aquarell, Raum: blaue Landhausküche

“As soon as the hare runs, the Galgo bitch gives chase.” The FCI standard quotes this line by the Archpriest of Hita to illustrate the breed’s original purpose. The same standard describes a calm, sometimes reserved dog at home. Understand that contrast before choosing one.

FCI Group 10 (Sighthounds), Section 3 Short-haired Sighthounds, Standard No. 285 Galgo Español (Spanish Greyhound), without working trial
Country of origin Spain
Size (height at the withers) males 62 to 70 cm, females 60 to 68 cm; up to 2 cm above permitted with excellent proportions
Weight not specified in the FCI standard
Life expectancy no reliable study figure found (N/A)
Coat dense, very fine, short and smooth; a variety with medium-long rough hair, beard, bushy eyebrows and topknot
Colours in the standard all colours permitted; typical in this order: fawn and brindle, black, black-spotted, dark fawn, cinnamon, yellow, red, white, pied

Hare hunter of the Spanish plains

Known to the Romans and probably present earlier on the Iberian Peninsula. The standard traces descent from ancient Asian sighthounds adapted to Spanish steppes and plains. Large numbers were exported to Ireland and England from the 16th to 18th centuries, and the breed is considered an ancestor of the Greyhound. Its speciality remained hare hunting over open ground.

Quiet indoors, alert in the field

The standard describes energy and liveliness once hunting starts. At home, expect a gentle, sensitive dog seeking closeness and struggling with loud harshness. An adult newcomer often needs weeks to learn about sounds, stairs and a new routine.

Running freely, safely

The typical gait is the gallop. Two weekly sprints in a fenced field and daily lead walks meet many Galgos’ needs. A narrow head slips easily from a collar, making a well-fitted escape-proof harness important while settling in.

Smooth or rough coat

Fine short hair needs only a rubber grooming mitt; the rough variety occasionally needs beard and eyebrows combed. Cold and hard floors require more attention: a winter coat and a thick blanket in the bed.

Health and Spanish origins

No reliable Galgo lifespan figure exists; the breed is absent from McMillan and colleagues’ large UK analysis. Differences in blood values are well documented: 30 Galgos had higher haematocrit, haemoglobin and red-cell counts but fewer platelets than 20 dogs of other breeds (Mesa-Sanchez et al. 2012). Your vet should know this. For Galgos from Spain, arrange testing for Mediterranean diseases. Among 160 Galgos from central Spain, antibodies to Leishmania occurred in 13.1 percent, Anaplasma in 10 percent and Ehrlichia in 3.1 percent (Martínez-Durán et al. 2026). More on leishmaniosis appears in the Ibizan Hound entry.

A Galgo suits you if...

you want a calm, affectionate house dog, enjoy walks and can offer secure running space. First-time owners can do well if they take the hunting instinct seriously.

Choose another dog if...

you want free-running woodland and field walks, must introduce cats without assessing compatibility or need a guard dog. With peace and time, however, this dog gladly shares the sofa.

The breed quiz assesses within minutes whether a Spanish sighthound suits your routine; our book “Which Dog REALLY Suits You?” (book in German) offers more thorough help. For a young Galgo, there is the free Puppy Starter Pack. Once home, capture your dog among our dog portraits or as a downloadable digital artwork.
