Wetterhoun (Frisian Water Dog)

Wetterhoun (Friesischer Wasserhund) als Wandbild im Stil Kohle-Sketch, Raum: gelbe Wohnküche

Around 1.000 dogs worldwide: that is the Wetterhoun population given by the FCI standard for 2013. The Frisian Water Dog once hunted otters and other small predators, pulled dog carts in the 19th and 20th centuries and guarded the farm. Anyone seeking one today needs patience and should understand the commitment.

An otter hunter from watery Friesland

The standard says its ancestors supposedly arrived with travelling people or sailors from countries around the Baltic Sea. Its home was the watery landscape of Friesland in the northern Netherlands. In the early 20th century, it was crossed so often with the Stabijhoun that both breeds risked losing their character. From 1938, enthusiasts in the Fryslân kennel club separated the lines again; both were officially recognised in 1942, with the first standard dating from 1944.

A mind that decides for itself

The standard says it plainly: the Wetterhoun is naturally strong-willed. It is affectionate with family, watchful around the home and eager to pursue vermin. Initially reserved with strangers, it should not be fearful. Slightly slanting eyes give it the stern expression characteristic of the breed. Training succeeds through calmness, consistency and a task it understands, rarely through pressure.

What it needs outdoors

The FCI requires a working trial. Water, scent work and real tasks outdoors suit it better than ball games at the dog park. Plan long daily walks, ideally beside a lake or river.

Curls with weather protection

The firm curls, formed from hair tufts, feel coarse and slightly greasy. Skin without folds and close-fitting lips and eyelids: the standard describes a straightforward, robust dog without exaggeration. After water outings, check inside the ears, whose curly hair becomes short towards the lower tip.

Epilepsy in a small population

A Dutch study assessed breed-club case reports from nine Dutch breeds (Rolink et al. 2026). In the Wetterhoun, 109 cases of epilepsy without an identifiable cause were recorded against 3.841 dogs registered from 1979 to 2020: 2,8 per cent, the highest figure in the study. For the general dog population, the authors give 0,6 to 0,75 per cent. Of nine Wetterhouns examined more closely, seven were related to another epileptic dog; median age at first seizure was 27,5 months. The club uses outcrossing to strengthen the small breeding population. Ask about seizures among relatives when buying a puppy. We found no reliable lifespan figure.

Who will be happy with it

Experienced dog owners with space, time and enthusiasm for water work, who appreciate an independent partner and bring patience to the search for a puppy.

Better to choose another dog

This Frisian is the wrong choice for a first dog, a cramped city flat or anyone expecting unquestioning obedience.

The breed quiz can help assess whether a Wetterhoun fits your life; our book offers more detail: “Welcher Hund passt WIRKLICH zu dir?” (book in German). For another curly water dog, read about the Spanish Water Dog (Perro de Agua Español). For the first year with a puppy, there is the free Puppy Starter Pack. Dark curls look striking in our dog portraits from your own photo, perhaps as a poster in a wooden frame.
