Can dogs eat watermelon?

Wassermelone auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Green: safe

Yes, dogs can eat watermelon, but without seeds or rind. The American Kennel Club (AKC) describes the flesh as a safe snack, as long as you prepare it properly.

Why watermelon is popular

According to the AKC, watermelon is around 92 percent water, contains no fat and is low in calories. A chilled piece is therefore a welcome way to cool down on hot days. It still does not replace the water bowl: always keep fresh drinking water available. Watermelon is not listed in the ASPCA plant database, so this assessment is based on the AKC.

What to keep in mind

  • Remove the seeds: According to the AKC, seeds can get stuck in the throat, especially in small dogs, and large numbers can block the intestines.
  • Remove the rind: The green rind is difficult to digest. It can cause stomach pain, vomiting and diarrhoea, while large pieces can cause an intestinal blockage in the worst case.
  • Frozen: Freeze seedless cubes, cut to a suitable size for your dog.
  • Start small: Give only a few pieces the first time and see how your dog’s stomach responds.
  • A snack rather than a meal: Even too much flesh can upset the stomach. Melon supplements food; it does not replace it.

What if your dog has eaten rind or seeds?

If your dog has eaten large pieces of rind or a great many seeds, watch closely over the next few hours. Call your vet if your dog vomits repeatedly, has diarrhoea, seems weak or cannot pass a stool. With small dogs, it is better to call sooner rather than later.

If you suspect poisoning, contact your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
