Can dogs eat chocolate?

Schokolade auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Red: toxic

No, chocolate is toxic to dogs. It contains theobromine and caffeine, two substances from the methylxanthine group that dogs break down very slowly.

Why chocolate is dangerous

According to the MSD Veterinary Manual, methylxanthines can cause life-threatening heart rhythm abnormalities and central nervous system disorders in dogs. The ASPCA lists possible signs including vomiting and diarrhoea, panting, intense thirst and increased urination, restlessness, heart rhythm abnormalities, trembling and seizures. Dogs are most often affected because they eat whatever they find.

Which chocolate is worst?

The darker it is, the more dangerous. Cocoa powder and baking chocolate contain the most methylxanthines, while dark chocolate contains much more than milk chocolate. White chocolate contains very little, but it is high in fat and sugar and is therefore unsuitable for dogs too. Cocoa shell mulch in the garden can also contain theobromine.

What to watch for

  • Keep chocolate, chocolates, cakes, biscuits and cocoa out of reach, including in bags and coat pockets.
  • Take particular care at Easter, Christmas and birthdays: presents under the tree smell tempting to dogs.
  • Explain to children that the dog must not share their chocolate bar.

What if your dog has eaten chocolate?

Do not wait for signs to develop. Call your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately and have these details ready: which chocolate it was (type, cocoa content and, ideally, the packaging), roughly how much was eaten, when it happened and how much your dog weighs. Do not give home remedies or induce vomiting yourself. Your vet will decide what treatment is needed.

If you suspect poisoning, take your dog to a vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
