Scottish Terrier

Scottish Terrier als Wandbild im Stil Ölgemälde, Raum: cremefarbenes Wohnzimmer

The public often sees it as a dour Scot, the FCI standard itself says, but with family and friends it is affectionate and cheerful. At the slightest sound, it is nevertheless ready to guard its home.

Life expectancy Median 12,7 years among 1.747 Scottish Terriers in a British analysis (McMillan et al. 2024)
Coat Close-fitting double coat; short, dense, soft undercoat; harsh, dense, wiry outer coat
Colours according to the standard Black, wheaten or brindle in any shade; no other colours or combinations permitted

A club founded in 1882

The standard gives precise dates: the first breed standard appeared in 1881 and the Scottish Terrier Club in 1882, just three years after Captain Gordon Murray began developing the breed in its present form. This short-legged Highland terrier is intended for work underground and must fit into a burrow, ruling out excessively heavy dogs.

Dignity, loyalty and a mind of its own

Loyal and faithful, dignified, independent and reserved, courageous and highly intelligent, bold but never aggressive: this is the temperament described. It tends to keep strangers at a distance and likes considering commands before following them. Patient, consistent training makes it a reliable housemate. Children should understand that it is no cuddly toy to carry around.

Short legs, plenty of power

Despite its short legs, the standard describes a very agile, active dog with remarkably powerful hindquarters. It digs passionately and loves search games, whereas hours of jogging are not its discipline.

A wire coat for hand-stripping

To keep the outer coat harsh and weatherproof, dead hair is usually hand-stripped. Clipping is easier but softens the coat. Beard and eyebrows need regular combing and wiping; between stripping appointments, brushing twice a week is enough.

Bladder cancer and bleeding tendencies

Among 1.747 Scotties, median lifespan was 12,7 years, compared with 12,0 for crossbreeds (McMillan et al. 2024). One risk stands out, however: bladder cancer. In a US clinical database, Scottish Terriers developed invasive bladder cancer around 21 times as often as crossbreeds (Knapp et al. 2019). Case-control studies, each involving over 80 affected Scotties, point to environmental influences: herbicide-treated lawns were associated with a three- to sevenfold risk (Glickman et al. 2004), while vegetables at least three times weekly were associated with around 70 per cent lower risk (Raghavan et al. 2005). Blood in the urine or frequent straining to urinate needs prompt veterinary attention. There is also inherited von Willebrand disease, a severe bleeding tendency: of 87 Scotties in a voluntary sample, 15 were carriers and 4 affected; a genetic test exists (Venta et al. 2000).

A Scottie suits you if

you want a small, robust dog with dignity that does not love everyone, but loves its own people deeply. Those familiar with terriers who plan for grooming should meet few surprises.

Less suitable if

you expect a dog-park companion and endless cuddles, or young children would constantly demand its attention.

For another small wire-haired terrier, read about the West Highland White Terrier; for a Briton with more working drive, see the Border Terrier. The breed quiz can help you decide whether such an independent dog suits you; our book takes a thorough look: “Welcher Hund passt WIRKLICH zu dir?” (book in German). With a puppy, the free Puppy Starter Pack helps you through the start. Its bearded profile looks striking as a digital artwork to download or among our dog portraits.
