Thai Bangkaew Dog

Thai Bangkaew als Wandbild im Stil Minimal, feine Farbzeichnung, Raum: cremefarbenes Wohnzimmer

It began with a black-and-white female belonging to a Buddhist abbot and a now-extinct wild dog. That is how the FCI standard tells the origins of this dog from Bangkaew village in Phitsanulok province, where the breed remains a valued heritage.

FCI Group 5 (Spitz and primitive types), Section 5 Asian Spitz and related breeds, Standard No. 358, without working trial
Country of origin Thailand (Phitsanulok province)
Size (height at the withers) given as ideal height: males minimum 46, maximum 55 cm; females minimum 41, maximum 50 cm
Weight not specified in the FCI standard
Life expectancy no reliable study figure found (N/A)
Coat double: straight, coarse outer coat and soft, dense undercoat, moderately long, ruff around neck and shoulders, feathered legs; short or smooth coat disqualifies
Colours in the standard white with clearly defined lemon, red, fawn, tan or grey patches, also with black hair tips giving a tricolour appearance, or white with black patches; all white a serious fault, solid colour with little white disqualifies

From Bangkaew village across Thailand

From 1957, breeders selectively chose dogs from individual litters, producing today’s generations. The dogs became so numerous and well known in the province that they are now bred throughout the country. The standard gives the purpose simply as utility dog. Another Thai breed is the Thai Ridgeback, a short-haired primitive-type dog with a ridge along the back.

Eleven years on probation

The FCI accepted the Bangkaew provisionally in 2011, but definitively only in 2022. Until then, according to the FCI, these dogs could become World and Section Winners but could not receive a CACIB, the certificate towards the International Beauty Champion title.

Alert and easy to handle

Alert, intelligent, loyal, attentive and obedient, and easy to train: a remarkably agreeable description for a Spitz. Some reserve towards strangers is desired. These dogs enjoy working with people and initially assess visitors.

Powerful, never overexcited

The standard describes flowing, powerful movement, but never excessive reach, drive or speed. Long daily walks, small searching tasks and some obedience training keep these dogs satisfied; they need not become elite athletes.

Mane, feathering and a bushy tail

The hair forms a ruff around neck and shoulders, more noticeable in males; the backs of the legs are feathered and the tail richly coated. To prevent matting, brush thoroughly down to the skin at least weekly, more often during shedding.

What is known about health

No reliable lifespan figure is available, and the breed is absent from McMillan et al.’s large UK study of 2024. A Thai study of 82 Bangkaew dogs using 15 genetic markers found high genetic diversity and therefore little evidence of inbreeding (Patta et al. 2024). Breed-specific normal values exist for electroretinography eye examinations: certain retinal responses took longer in Thai Bangkaews than in Poodles, Labradors and Thai Ridgebacks (Sussadee et al. 2015).

Are they right for you?

They suit people wanting a medium-sized, watchful, responsive dog, who enjoy the outdoors and accept regular grooming. They are less suitable if you want a dog who instantly greets every stranger or if hair on sofa and clothing bothers you. Provide exercise and brushing, and you gain a loyal housemate with an impressive mane.
