Can dogs eat coconut?

Kokos auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

Yes, but only a little and without the shell. The ASPCA says small amounts of coconut and coconut products are unlikely to seriously harm pets. However, the flesh and milk of fresh coconuts contain oils that can upset the stomach.

Why coconut gets a yellow rating

Coconut is non-toxic but high in fat. According to the ASPCA, it can cause an upset stomach, soft stools and diarrhoea. The American Kennel Club considers small amounts of flesh, coconut water and unsweetened coconut milk safe, but warns about the hard shell and fibrous husk: they can block the intestines and irritate the stomach. The AKC recommends other snacks for overweight dogs, and consulting your vet first if your dog has had pancreatitis.

How to serve coconut safely

  • Small pieces: A few flakes or a small piece of flesh are enough.
  • Unsweetened: Only offer coconut flakes, chips and milk without sugar. Check sweetened products for xylitol, which the AKC says is toxic to dogs.
  • Do not use the shell as a toy: Half a coconut is not a chew toy. Splinters and fibres can become lodged.
  • Coconut water as an occasional treat: According to the AKC, it does not replace drinking water.
  • Coconut oil: According to the AKC, larger amounts of oil can easily cause diarrhoea.
  • No baked goods: Coconut macaroons and chocolates contain sugar and often chocolate too.

What if your dog has eaten too much?

After a bag of coconut flakes, soft stools are likely. Offer water and a small, light meal. If your dog has swallowed shell fragments or fibres, is gagging, vomits repeatedly or cannot pass a stool, call your vet.

If you suspect poisoning, contact your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
