Can dogs eat grapefruit?

Grapefruit auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

Best avoided. The flesh is edible, but the peel and plant are not. The ASPCA nevertheless lists grapefruit as toxic to dogs in its plant database.

Why grapefruit gets a yellow rating

At first glance, the sources sound contradictory. The ASPCA classifies the grapefruit plant as toxic, yet describes the flesh as edible in the same entry. According to the ASPCA, the problems come from essential oils and psoralens in the peel and plant parts. Possible symptoms include vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy and skin irritation. The American Kennel Club describes the flesh as non-toxic but advises against feeding it because citric acid can seriously irritate a dog’s stomach. The AKC also considers the peel toxic.

What to keep in mind

  • Keep peels away: Put grapefruit peels in a bin your dog cannot open.
  • No juice: Juice and grapefruit soft drinks are acidic and often contain added sugar.
  • Choose milder fruit: If you want to share citrus fruit, the AKC suggests a small piece of peeled mandarin or orange instead.
  • A matter of taste: Most dogs dislike the bitter flavour anyway. There is no need to persuade them.

What if your dog has eaten grapefruit?

According to the ASPCA, a small piece of citrus flesh usually causes no more than a mild stomach upset. If your dog has eaten a lot of flesh, call your vet. For peel or plant parts, the AKC advises calling your vet or an emergency veterinary service straight away. Explain roughly how much your dog has eaten.

If you suspect poisoning, contact your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
