Can dogs eat blueberries?

Green: safe

Yes, dogs can eat blueberries. The American Kennel Club (AKC) describes the berries as a healthy addition in moderation. The ASPCA’s plant database has no specific entry for blueberry.

Why blueberries are popular

These little berries are low in calories and provide fibre, vitamin C and plenty of antioxidants. The AKC points to research suggesting antioxidants could counteract ageing processes in the canine brain, which is particularly relevant to senior dogs. Their size is handy too: one berry is one bite, ideal for catching or as a training reward.

What to watch out for

  • Wash thoroughly: This removes soil, germs and pesticide residues.
  • Halve them for tiny dogs: A whole berry can be a choking hazard for very small dogs.
  • Frozen is fine too: Frozen berries make a refreshing change in summer.
  • Keep them plain: Blueberry muffins, cakes and yoghurt with sugar or sweeteners do not belong in your dog’s bowl.
  • Occasionally, rather than daily: Even healthy treats upset the balance of your dog’s diet if you give too many.

What if your dog eats too many?

A large amount at once can upset the stomach, usually resulting in soft stools. Let your dog rest, provide water and keep an eye on them. If diarrhoea persists, they vomit or stop eating, call your vet. If they have eaten blueberry cake or baked goods, check the ingredients, especially for xylitol and raisins.

If you suspect poisoning, go straight to your vet or an emergency veterinary service.
