Can dogs eat pumpkin?

Kürbis auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Green: safe

Yes, dogs can eat pumpkin. The ASPCA lists edible squashes such as butternut, Hubbard and acorn squash as non-toxic to dogs in its plant database.

Why pumpkin is fine

According to veterinary-reviewed information from PetMD, plain cooked pumpkin and pure pumpkin purée without additives are well tolerated and rich in fibre. In veterinary practice, a little pumpkin is often recommended for mild constipation or mild diarrhoea. In autumn, when pumpkin is already on many kitchen chopping boards, your dog can therefore have a few cooked cubes.

What to watch for

  • Cooked rather than raw: According to PetMD, raw pumpkin is hard to digest, and hard pieces and skin can get stuck in the throat or obstruct the intestines.
  • No pie filling: Pumpkin pies and desserts contain sugar, spices such as nutmeg and cloves, and sometimes xylitol. According to the ASPCA, xylitol can dangerously lower blood sugar and damage the liver.
  • Ground seeds only: Pumpkin seeds are safe, with roasted, ground seeds sprinkled over food being the safest option.
  • Count it in: Pumpkin also forms part of the daily food allowance.

What if your dog has nibbled a decorative pumpkin?

A bite of fresh pumpkin is usually harmless. It is a different matter when pumpkins outside the front door have become soft and mouldy: according to the Pet Poison Helpline, moulds in rotting material produce toxins that can cause vomiting, trembling, seizures and fever. Call your vet immediately if these occur. Also call if your dog has swallowed large raw pieces or skin and is vomiting.

If you suspect poisoning, take your dog to a vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
