Can dogs eat sweetcorn?

Mais auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

The kernels, yes; the cob, never. Sweetcorn kernels are not toxic to dogs. The cob, however, is among the objects dogs most often swallow that then require surgery.

Why sweetcorn is marked yellow

Veterinary-reviewed information from PetMD describes small servings of raw and cooked sweetcorn as safe, with cooked corn easier to digest. The problem is the cob. Vets at the ASPCA Animal Hospital in New York place corn cobs near the top of the list of foreign objects dogs swallow. The Pet Poison Helpline says cobs are difficult to see on X-rays. One potential source of confusion: the toxic “Corn Plant” in the ASPCA database is not maize, but a Dracaena.

What to watch for

  • Cut off the kernels: If you want to share, remove a few kernels from the cob. The Pet Poison Helpline gives the same advice.
  • Without butter or salt: According to PetMD, fat can strain the pancreas, and too much salt is harmful too. Corn in dishes containing onions or garlic is still off the menu.
  • Dispose of cobs securely: At barbecues, stripped cobs are easily left on a plate at the edge of the table. Put them straight into a closed bin.
  • Small amounts: Too much sweetcorn can upset the stomach and contribute to weight gain.

What if your dog has eaten a corn cob?

Do not wait. According to PetMD, you should take your dog to the vet immediately if you have seen them eat a cob or husks. Possible signs of an obstruction include repeated vomiting, loss of appetite, lethargy, diarrhoea and dehydration. Tell the vet when it happened and roughly how large the piece was.

If you suspect poisoning, take your dog to a vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
