Border Collie

Schwarz-weißer Border Collie als Magazin-Cover im Holzrahmen

A Border Collie seeing a flock changes its whole posture. Head low, gaze fixed, movement almost crouching. Its standard describes exactly this: movement should be stealthy and fast, with feet lifted as little as possible. In daily life, that gaze also focuses on bicycles, cats and the vacuum cleaner.

FCI Group 1 (Sheepdogs and Cattle Dogs), Section 1 Sheepdogs, Standard No. 297, with working trial
Country of origin Great Britain
Size (height at the withers) ideal: males 53 cm, females slightly less
Weight not specified in the FCI standard
Life expectancy median 13,1 years in a British analysis of 584.734 dogs (McMillan et al. 2024)
Coat two varieties: moderately long or short, each with a dense outer coat and soft, dense undercoat
Colours in the standard many colours permitted; white must never predominate

Origins

The Border Collie comes from Great Britain and was bred as a herding dog. The FCI still lists it with a working trial, making it a working dog in the truest sense. The standard favours performance over decoration: the body should be athletic and capable of sustained work, with any tendency to heaviness undesirable.

Temperament

According to the standard, it is capable of hard, sustained work, biddable, keen, alert, responsive and intelligent, neither nervous nor aggressive. Responsive means reading your body language precisely and reacting to tiny signals. That makes it eager to learn and sensitive to haste, noise and conflicting instructions.

Exercise and activities

Distance alone is not enough. A Border Collie wants to think and work with you: herding, obedience, agility, tracking or trick training. Learning to take breaks matters equally. Daily ball sessions that wind it up train a dog unable to switch off.

Grooming

Both coat varieties have dense undercoats. Weekly brushing usually suffices, more often during shedding. In the longer-haired variety, the mane, hind-leg feathering and tail tend to mat.

Health

One issue to know is epilepsy. A Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München study of 49 Border Collies with idiopathic epilepsy found severe disease with cluster seizures in 49 per cent; only 18 per cent achieved remission. Pedigree analysis suggested a genetic cause (Hülsmeyer et al. 2010). Ask whether seizures are known in the line, and request the parents’ eye and hip results.

Who is a Border Collie right for?

Experienced dog owners with daily training time who enjoy dog sports and want a thinking partner. Ideally with access to herding work.

Who is it less suitable for?

First-time owners without a training plan, hectic city flats and families expecting a laid-back companion. Too little stimulation quickly shows as herding children or cars.
