Smooth Fox Terrier (Fox Terrier (Smooth))

Foxterrier Glatthaar als Wandbild im Stil Kohle-Sketch mit Farbwaschung, Raum: salbeifarbener Flur

Britain’s first Fox Terrier standard was written in 1876, then for one breed with two coats. The FCI now separates them: the Smooth Fox Terrier (Fox Terrier (Smooth)) has number 12, its wire-haired brother a separate standard. What remains is a lively white terrier bred to pursue rats, rabbits and foxes, with seemingly tireless energy.

FCI Group 3 (Terriers), Section 1 Large and medium-sized Terriers, Standard No. 12, optional working trial
Country of origin Great Britain
Size (height at the withers) Males no more than 39 cm, females slightly smaller
Weight Males 7,5 to 8 kg, females 7 to 7,5 kg
Life expectancy median 13,5 years in a British analysis of 584.734 dogs, Smooth and Wire counted together (McMillan et al. 2024)
Coat straight, flat, smooth, hard, dense and abundant; belly and inner thighs not bare
Colours in the standard white should predominate: all white, white with tan, black-and-tan or black markings; brindle, red or liver markings highly undesirable

Developed from British hunting terriers

The FCI standard suggests the Fox Terrier descends from the same dog types as the Bull Terrier and Black and Tan Terrier, now Manchester Terrier. A consistent type formed in the late 19th century. The standard finds it remarkable that refinement for showing did not undermine soundness. Meet the hard-coated brother in the Wire Fox Terrier (Fox Terrier (Wire)) entry.

Alert and good-humoured

Attentive, quick in movement, keen in expression and always eager for what comes next: the standard describes a friendly, outgoing, fearless temperament. Day to day, this is a witty, people-oriented dog full of ideas. Set boundaries early and kindly, or it sets its own.

Plenty of exercise, clear rules for hunting instinct

The standard credits it with capacity for plenty of exercise. Long outings, running games, tracking and agility suit it; a quick circuit of the block does not. The hunting instinct is real: cats, rabbits and squirrels are quarry. Off-lead freedom works only where recall is truly reliable.

Grooming: little effort, plenty of hair

The short, hard coat needs no stripping. A natural-bristle brush or rubber grooming mitt once a week is enough. Still expect white hair on a dark sofa. The standard says tails were formerly usually docked and now describes both docked and natural tails. In Germany, docking is generally prohibited under Section 6 of the German Animal Welfare Act.

Hereditary ataxia and lifespan

Hereditary ataxia has been described in Smooth Fox Terriers, a cerebellar and spinal cord disease causing an unsteady, stiff gait. Three affected Smooth Fox Terriers carried two copies of a KCNJ10 variant also inherited recessively in the Parson Russell and Jack Russell Terrier (Rohdin et al. 2015). The sample is small, but testing is simple: ask whether both parents were tested. Fox Terriers reached a median 13,5 years in McMillan and colleagues’ British analysis, against 12,0 for crossbreeds. Smooth and Wire are grouped together there.

Who will be happy with this dog

Sporty people seeking a small, easy-care dog with a big need for exercise, who see training as play together. Older children keen to play are a bonus.

Who should choose another breed

Anyone needing quiet at home, keeping small pets or wanting an off-lead dog that never goes its own way.
