White Swiss Shepherd Dog (Berger Blanc Suisse)

Weißer Schweizer Schäferhund als Wandbild im Stil Royal mit kurzer Uniform, Raum: gelbe Wohnküche

The foundation sire was called Lobo, born in the USA in March 1966 and registered in Switzerland. That is what the FCI standard says. As a separate breed, the White Swiss Shepherd Dog (Berger Blanc Suisse) is young: the Swiss studbook has listed it only since June 1991, with definitive FCI recognition in 2011.

From North America to Switzerland

According to the standard, white shepherds in the USA and Canada gradually developed into a separate breed. The first dogs came to Switzerland in the early 1970s and spread from there across Europe. The relationship with the German Shepherd is visible, but the FCI lists separate standards.

Friendly without being pushy

The standard describes a lively, balanced temperament, attentive and easy to handle. These dogs seek contact without imposing, with strong social skills and readiness to bond. Fearful or inappropriately aggressive dogs are disqualified. This is a sensitive dog responding better to calm, clear training than pressure.

A family dog with an athlete’s heart

The standard names family and companion dog as the purpose, alongside a cheerful, responsive working and sporting dog suited to varied training. The trot covers ground with endurance. Long walks, tracking, obedience or rally obedience keep these dogs satisfied, with mental work counting as much as distance.

The white coat in daily life

Whether medium-length or long-haired, the dense undercoat needs thorough weekly brushing, almost daily during shedding. Dried dirt usually brushes out; constant bathing is unnecessary.

Medication, hips and elbows

White Swiss Shepherds carry the MDR1 genetic change that can make certain medications dangerous. In a German study, the altered allele accounted for 14 percent (Gramer et al. 2011); poisoning cases involving the worming drug doramectin have also been described (Geyer et al. 2007). A genetic test provides clarity; record the result in the vaccination booklet. In Sweden, 105 of 606 X-rayed dogs had hip dysplasia of grades C to E (17.3 percent); 118 of 608 had elbow abnormalities, mostly grade 1 (Engdahl et al. 2026). A reliable lifespan study is lacking; McMillan and colleagues’ large UK analysis does not include the breed.

Who benefits from this companion

Families and active individuals wanting an affectionate, eager-to-learn dog with substantial exercise needs, who enjoy training together. Previous shepherd-dog experience makes the start easier.

Where difficulties arise

With little time, harsh training methods or an expectation that such a large dog simply fits around everything else. Anyone unable to tolerate dog hair indoors should be honest with themselves too.

Video: White Shepherd reality check

The video explains why this is not a white German Shepherd, showing the gentle, sensitive character, family life and often underestimated traits.

The breed quiz helps you assess whether a large, sensitive shepherd fits your life; our book “Which Dog REALLY Suits You?” (book in German) offers more depth. If a puppy is joining you, the free Puppy Starter Pack supports the first weeks. Capture your white Swiss companion through our dog portraits from your own photo or as a poster in a wooden frame.
