Can dogs eat butter?

Butter auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

Best avoided; at most, a tiny amount. Butter is not poisonous, but dogs do not tolerate large amounts of fat well. The American Kennel Club recommends preparing potatoes and vegetables for dogs without butter.

Why butter is marked yellow

A vet quoted in the AKC article on potatoes says that a lot of butter can trigger pancreatitis. The Merck Veterinary Manual lists eating from bins, large quantities of table scraps and inappropriate food as common risk factors. According to Merck, typical signs of severe inflammation include loss of appetite, vomiting, weakness, abdominal pain, dehydration and diarrhoea. Some breeds are affected more often, including Miniature Schnauzers, Yorkshire Terriers, Cocker Spaniels, Dachshunds and Poodles. Butter is also a dairy product, and the ASPCA says dairy products can cause diarrhoea.

What to watch for

  • Keep it plain: Cook vegetables, potatoes or rice for your dog without butter or oil.
  • Keep the butter covered: An entire block can disappear from the breakfast table in seconds. Do not leave butter unattended.
  • Herb and garlic butter: These are especially unsuitable: garlic and chives are toxic to dogs.
  • Low fat after illness: According to Merck, dogs recovering from mild pancreatitis are usually given low-fat food and low-fat snacks.
  • Take extra care with a previous diagnosis: If your dog has had pancreatitis before, fatty food is particularly risky.

What if your dog has eaten a piece of butter?

Expect stomach rumbling or diarrhoea. Offer water, keep the next meal small and light, and monitor your dog over the next few days. If your dog vomits repeatedly, refuses food, hunches over or seems weak, call your vet. If it was garlic or herb butter, mention this straight away.

If you suspect poisoning, take your dog to a vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
