Green: safe
Yes, dogs can eat carrots, raw or cooked. The ASPCA lists carrots as non-toxic to dogs in its plant database and explicitly describes the root as edible.

Why carrots make a good snack
The German names Karotte, Möhre and Mohrrübe all refer to the same root vegetable: the carrot. It is low in calories and, according to the American Kennel Club, provides vitamin A, potassium and fibre. Many dogs enjoy gnawing on a raw piece, and the AKC says chewing can also benefit their teeth. Cooked and mashed, carrots can be mixed into food.
What to watch for
- Pieces, not whole carrots: Cut whole carrots and carrot sticks into bite-sized pieces so they cannot get stuck in the throat.
- Wash or peel: This removes soil and possible residues.
- The tops are not a toy: The ASPCA notes that the plant contains psoralens, which can irritate the skin. The green tops therefore do not belong in your dog’s bed.
- Plain only: Carrots in cakes or glazed with butter and sugar are not dog snacks.
- Count them in: Vegetables also count towards the daily food allowance.
What if your dog has eaten too many?
A whole bag of carrots can cause loose stools or wind, but usually nothing more. Offer water and monitor your dog. If your dog has swallowed a large piece whole and is gagging, coughing or seems restless, call your vet immediately.
If you suspect poisoning, take your dog to a vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
