Can dogs eat apples?

Äpfel auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

Yes, but only the flesh. Cored apple pieces are a common snack for dogs. Seeds, stems and leaves should stay out of their bowl.

Why it gets a yellow rating

The ASPCA lists the apple tree as toxic to dogs in its plant database. This refers to the stems, leaves and seeds, rather than pieces of apple flesh. They contain cyanogenic glycosides that can release hydrogen cyanide in the body, particularly when leaves wilt. The flesh itself is not affected. Because the plant is listed as toxic and only part of the apple is safe, it gets a yellow rating here.

How to serve apple safely

  • Remove the core: Quarter the apple and cut well around the seeds and stem to remove them.
  • Small pieces: Thin slices are better than whole quarters, especially for small dogs.
  • Do not use whole apples as toys: A dog chewing a whole apple will eat the core too, and a large piece could get stuck in their throat.
  • Windfalls in the garden: Clear away fermenting apples under the tree. Many dogs enjoy eating them, but their stomachs rarely appreciate it.
  • Count it towards the daily allowance: Apples contain sugar too and count towards your dog’s daily intake.

What if your dog has eaten too much?

The risk from swallowed seeds, stems or leaves depends on the amount eaten and your dog’s size. If your dog has eaten a lot, such as windfalls together with leaves, it is better to check with your vet. Water and a smaller next meal will usually help with diarrhoea or gas after eating too much apple. If your dog has trouble breathing, unusually red gums, restlessness or weakness, every minute counts.

If you suspect poisoning, contact your vet or an emergency veterinary service immediately.
