Coton de Tuléar

Coton de Tuléar als Wandbild im Stil Aquarell, Raum: blauer Flur

Coton means cotton, exactly how the FCI standard describes the hair: very soft, supple and cotton-like, never harsh or rough. It also counts adaptability to any lifestyle among the breed’s most important traits.

Country of origin Madagascar, patronage France
Height at the withers Males 26 to 28 cm, females 23 to 25 cm, each with tolerance of 2 cm above and 1 cm below
Weight Males 4 to a maximum of 6 kg, females 3,5 to a maximum of 5 kg
Life expectancy Median 14,2 years in a British analysis, but only 319 Cotons (McMillan et al. 2024)
Coat Very soft, supple and cotton-like, dense and abundant; a very slight wave permitted
Colours according to the standard White base colour; traces of light grey or fawn ticking permitted on ears and tolerated on the body provided the overall impression remains white

From Madagascar to France

According to the standard, the dog reached France long before official recognition in 1970, quickly taking a leading place among companions. Today, it is found worldwide. It belongs with Bichons and related breeds, alongside the Bichon Frise (Bichon à poil frisé), the Maltese and the Havanese (Bichon Havanais).

Good spirits with people and dogs

Cheerful, even-tempered and very sociable with dogs and people: the standard’s description fits daily life well. The Coton is closely attached to family and dislikes long periods alone. Play and food usually make training easy; harshness creates insecurity.

Exercise without performance pressure

The standard describes light, free movement without great ground coverage. Walks totalling an hour daily, ball games and little tricks bring satisfaction. The dog may join an occasional jog, but is no partner for long cycling trips.

White does not stay white by itself

The dense cotton-like coat mats quickly, particularly behind ears and in armpits. Plan thorough brushing down to the skin several times weekly and introduce it early to a puppy. Dry thoroughly after wet outings to prevent knots. Many owners keep the coat a little shorter with a practical trim.

What research knows about the Coton

The median of 14,2 years sounds encouraging but rests on only 319 dogs and 44 deaths, making it uncertain (McMillan et al. 2024). Bandera ataxia is well researched: a recessively inherited cerebellar disorder appearing in newborn puppies. All 15 affected puppies in one study carried two copies of the same GRM1 change; a DNA test is available (Zeng et al. 2011). Spinal discs are another concern. In 465 tested Cotons, the FGF4 variant associated with premature calcification accounted for 35 % of gene copies examined. Discs were severely calcified in 16 % of young dogs X-rayed, and each variant copy increased risk (Reunanen et al. 2025). Ask for genetic tests and X-ray results.

A good fit if

You want a friendly little family dog, including as a beginner, spend plenty of time at home and do not regard grooming as a burden.

Less suitable if

The dog would be alone for long working days, a white coat with muddy paws would become too much, or you seek a sporting partner for endurance outings.
