Cardigan Welsh Corgi (Welsh Corgi (Cardigan))

Welsh Corgi Cardigan als Wandbild im Stil Aquarell, Raum: skandinavisches Wohnzimmer

From behind, it is instantly recognisable. The FCI standard requires the Cardigan Welsh Corgi (Welsh Corgi (Cardigan)) to have a fox-brush tail, set in line with the body and long enough to touch or almost touch the ground. At the front, a fox-like head and upright ears, fairly large relative to the dog, complete the picture.

Country of origin Great Britain
Size (height at the withers) ideal 30 cm

Life expectancy median 13,1 years in a British analysis of 584.734 dogs, including 203 Cardigans (McMillan et al. 2024)
Coat short or medium length, harsh texture, weatherproof with good undercoat, as straight as possible
Colours in the standard blue merle, brindle, red, sable, tricolour with brindle or red markings; each with or without typical white markings, which must not predominate or surround eyes

A cattle dog close to the ground

The current standard has no history section. It names Great Britain as origin, herding and companionship as use and places the Cardigan among cattle dogs; the FCI definitively recognised it on 12.11.1963. It requires a strong, tough, enduring dog, distinctly longer than tall, with short legs and belly clear of the ground. Its relative, the Pembroke Welsh Corgi, has a separate FCI standard.

Watchful, calm and not shy

Attentive, active and intelligent, yet balanced, neither shy nor aggressive: the standard needs no more words. It excludes aggressive or excessively shy dogs. The Cardigan observes before acting. Driving livestock is in its nature; running children or joggers may trigger it. Channel this impulse early into games with clear rules.

What keeps it occupied

Varied daily walks plus mental tasks: search games, tricks, treibball or guided herding training. A circuit of the block alone makes it inventive.

Coat and condition

The harsh, weatherproof coat with undercoat sheds generously, especially during moulting. Twice-weekly brushing usually suffices, more often during shedding.

Two genetic tests that matter

Degenerative myelopathy is a slowly progressive spinal-cord disease. In a US analysis of genetic tests, 79 of 544 Cardigans carried two copies of the SOD1 risk variant, just over 14 per cent; homozygous dogs had a substantially higher disease risk (Zeng et al. 2014). Samples came from owners and breeders requesting testing, rather than a representative breed sample. For inherited retinal degeneration, progressive retinal atrophy type rcd3, Petersen-Jones and colleagues found the PDE6A cause in 1999. Ask for both parents’ test results. Life expectancy is good: a median 13,1 years compared with 12,0 in crossbreeds, measured in 203 Cardigans (McMillan et al. 2024).

A Cardigan suits you if

you want a small, robust dog with a big personality, enjoy the outdoors and training, and take hair on the sofa in your stride. Families whose children follow rules also gain an attentive companion.

Difficult if

you want a dog that simply tags along and questions nothing, or daily life leaves little activity time. Otherwise, an under-stimulated cattle dog soon controls the flat.
