Can dogs eat lemons?

Zitronen auf einem hellen Holzbrett

Yellow: with caution

Best avoided, although licking a lemon wedge is not an emergency. The ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center lists lemon as toxic to dogs, but explicitly says the fruit is edible. The peel and plant parts cause the problems.

Why lemons get a yellow rating

According to the ASPCA, the peel, leaves and stems contain essential oils and psoralens. Possible effects include vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy and skin irritation. For citrus fruits in general, the ASPCA says the flesh alone is unlikely to cause more than a mildly upset stomach. The American Kennel Club (AKC) still advises against it: lemon juice contains a lot of citric acid, and swallowed peel can obstruct the stomach. Most dogs avoid the smell anyway.

What to watch out for

  • Not a toy: A whole lemon to roll around and bite is not a good idea.
  • Lemon oil: Essential oil belongs neither in the bowl nor on the coat. According to the AKC, it can damage the liver and digestive tract.
  • Lemonade and cake: According to the AKC, sweetened lemon products contain too much sugar for dogs.
  • Potted lemon trees: Keep leaves and fallen fruit out of reach.
  • Better fruit choices: Apple with the core removed or a few blueberries are gentler options.

What if your dog has eaten a lemon?

A brief lick or a small piece of flesh usually causes no more than an upset stomach. If your dog has eaten a whole lemon or a lot of peel, the AKC recommends calling your vet straight away. The same applies if your dog has licked lemon oil or vomits, develops diarrhoea or seems unusually quiet after eating it.

If you suspect poisoning, go straight to your vet or an emergency veterinary service.
